Exploring Northumberland
I’ve just got back from the most gloriously lazy week in a cracking holiday cottage in Northumberland, and honestly, it’s left me wondering why I ever bother rushing about in life. Tucked away in the rolling hills near Alnwick, this place was pure bliss – a cosy stone-built gem with fluffy towels, a telly bigger than my lounge at home, and that holy grail of holiday rentals: a private hot tub bubbling away on the deck. No itinerary, no alarms, just me, a stack of books, and the kind of deep relaxation that makes you forget what day it is.

From the moment we arrived – bags dumped by the Aga, kettle on for a proper brew – the plan was to do bugger all. And we nailed it. Mornings started late, with sunlight filtering through the sash windows onto the squishy sofa. I’d crack open a paperback – some ripping historical yarn about the Border Reivers, perfect for the area – and sink into it with a cuppa. Northumberland’s got that magical quiet; no traffic hum, just the odd bleat from sheep on the fells or a buzzard overhead. It’s like the county itself is whispering, “Slow down, you daft sod.”

The hot tub became my command centre. Mid-morning, I’d slip in with a cold beer (local Brewdog from the offie in Alnwick, naturally), bubbles massaging away the last knots from London life. Hours vanished staring at the sky, watching clouds morph into dragons or whatever. One afternoon, I swear I dozed off mid-soak, only waking when a cheeky robin hopped onto the edge for crumbs from my crisps. Hilarious, really – me, turning into a prune-pruned nature documentary. No guilt, though; that’s the joy of it. Why hike the Cheviots when you can lounge here, pretending you’re a posh spa guest?

Lunches were faff-free: raiding the fridge stocked with Northumberland treats – smoked kippers from Craster, crumbly cheddar from the local farm shop, and crusty bread from the bakery in Embleton. Eaten on the patio, feet up, with the sea breeze carrying hints of salt from nearby Beadnell Bay. Afternoons blurred into more reading, maybe a wander to the garden swing for a nap, or fiddling with the wood burner as the light faded. Evenings? Hot tub redux, fairy lights twinkling, a bottle of red, and zero plans. The cottage had board games gathering dust, but who needs Monopoly when silence is golden?

Reflecting on it now, curled up back home with the grey drizzle outside, I realise how rare it is to just *be*. Work’s always nagging, mates texting “What’s the plan?”, but there in that Northumberland haven, I let it all go. No FOMO, no scroll-induced frenzy. One evening, staring at the stars – proper dark skies, milky way on show – I had a proper moment: life’s too short for constant doing. Why not savour the nothing? It recharged me more than any gym session or bucket-list tick.

We did venture out once, for fish and chips from the Seahouses hut, eaten back in the tub like absolute legends. Greasy perfection. But mostly, it was lazy cottage days that stole the show. If you’re after proper downtime, book something like this – crack on with the minimalism. Northumberland’s wild beauty is the perfect backdrop for doing sweet FA, and I’m already plotting a return. Cheers to the art of bugger all!
