Exploring Northumberland
I’ve just got back from a cracking little getaway in Northumberland, holed up in this brilliant holiday cottage right on the edge of the Northumberland National Park, and blimey, what a rollercoaster of walks and weather it turned out to be. Picture this: a cosy stone-built place called Crag View Cottage (or something equally daft and inviting), with flagged floors, a wood-burning stove, and windows that framed the wild moors like a painting. It slept four of us comfy, but I went solo for some proper thinking time, packing my wellies and a thermos, ready to tackle the trails. Little did I know the British weather had other ideas.

Day one dawned bright as a button—proper blue skies, the kind that make you forget it’s England. I laced up and headed straight for Hadrian’s Wall, that iconic snaking barrier the Romans chucked up to keep the northern tribes at bay. From the cottage, it was a brisk 20-minute drive to Once Brewed (yes, that’s its real name—cheers for the chuckle, history), and then I was off on the Hadrian’s Wall Path. The hike up to Sycamore Gap is legendary, that lone tree arching over the wall like it’s photobombed a million selfies. I strode along the crags, wind whipping my cheeks, feeling like a proper adventurer. Vistas for days: rolling hills, sheep dotted about like fluffy clouds, and not a soul in sight bar a few hardy wall-walkers. I picnicked by Steel Rigg, munching cheese butties, utterly chuffed. Weather: 10/10, couldn’t ask for better.

But oh, Northumberland’s skies have a wicked sense of humour. By evening, as I trudged back to the cottage—sore feet but buzzing—the clouds rolled in like uninvited guests. Next morning? Biblical downpour. My plan for a gentle amble along the River Coquet? Scrubbed. Instead, I adapted like a true Brit: layered up in waterproofs and embraced the squall. We dashed to the coast—Bamburgh Beach is only half an hour away—and battled horizontal rain along the sands. The North Sea was thrashing about, waves crashing like thunder, and the Farne Islands loomed misty in the distance. It was bracing, to say the least; I laughed out loud as a gust nearly bowled me over, turning my brolly inside out. Spot of gentle self-reflection there, mid-soak: why do I always pack light on thermals? Lesson learned—next time, it’s the full thermonuclear layer system.

Undeterred, we pivoted inland for the afternoon. The weather eased to a drizzle (progress!), so I tackled a loop from Ingram in the Breamish Valley—proper cheviot hills, heather moorland, and those babbling burns that make you want to dip your toes. The path climbed steadily, mud sucking at my boots, but the views over the Simonside Hills were worth every slippery step. I spotted a red squirrel darting through the pines (rarity points!), and paused for a brew under a dripping tree, pondering life’s little parallels: just like the weather, plans shift, but the best bits come from rolling with it. Back at the cottage by dusk, I stoked the fire, feet up with a mug of tea, listening to the rain patter on the slate roof. Bliss.

Final day, the sun cheekily peeked out again, gifting us a misty hike from the cottage door along the forest tracks towards the Dark Sky Park—Northumberland’s got some of the darkest skies in Europe, perfect for stargazing if the clouds play ball. We wandered the Rothbury Forest trails, lungs full of piney air, dodging puddles like pros. A quick detour to Lordenshaws hillfort for Iron Age vibes, then homeward, knackered but glowing.

That’s Northumberland for you—hikes that thrill, weather that tests, and a cottage that feels like a hug after it all. If you’re after proper exploring without the crowds, grab your strides and go. Just pack the waterproofs. I’m already plotting the return.
