Exploring Northumberland
From the moment we arrived, after that scenic drive up the A1 with its glimpses of rugged coastline, I knew this was going to be a holiday defined by sloth. No grand plans, no packed itineraries – just us, the cottage, and a resolute commitment to slowing right down. The owners had thought of everything: a wood-burning stove crackling away (though we barely lifted a finger to stoke it), a telly for the odd episode of something mindless, and a kitchen stocked with local treats like Northumberland cheese and fudge from nearby farm shops. But we weren’t here for gourmet marathons; breakfast was a stagger to the fridge for bacon butties, eaten in pyjamas at noon if we fancied. The hot tub, though – oh, that was the absolute hero of the week. Nestled on a private wooden deck overlooking rolling fields dotted with sheep, it bubbled away invitingly from dawn till dusk. I’d sink in with a cuppa (proper builder’s tea, none of your herbal nonsense), letting the jets knead away the stresses of real life. One afternoon, I spent a solid three hours there, alternating between gazing at the sky – which shifted from moody greys to golden sunsets over the Cheviots – and dipping my head back for a sneaky nap. My other half caught me snoring bubbles once; I blamed the steam, but truth be told, it was pure, unadulterated relaxation. Who needs adrenaline rushes when you’ve got lukewarm bliss like this? Reading became my Olympic sport. I’d flop onto the squishy corner sofa with its pile of tartan blankets, a dog-eared paperback in hand – mine was a battered copy of All Creatures Great and Small, perfect for the rural vibes. Northumberland’s quiet seeps into you; no city clamour, just the distant bleat of lambs and the occasional curlew’s cry. I’d lose hours turning pages, only pausing to brew more tea or nibble on crisps. One rainy morning (as you’d expect up here), I reflected on how I never make time for this at home. Work emails ping away, the school run looms – but here, staring at rain-lashed windows, I realised slowing down isn’t lazy; it’s essential. It’s like recharging your soul’s battery, innit? Evenings were for minimal effort: a simple supper of fish and chips from Craster (delivered, naturally), then back to the hot tub under the stars. The Northumberland sky is something else – clear, vast, with the Milky Way winking down. We’d chat about nothing much, or nothing at all, just soaking and sighing. No scrolling social media; the cottage Wi-Fi was spotty by design, I reckon, which forced us to unplug properly. By the end of the week, I felt like a human jelly – wobbly, content, and utterly restored. Driving home, past Bamburgh Castle’s dramatic silhouette, I vowed to bottle this feeling. Northumberland’s wild beauty is there for the hiking hordes, sure, but for me, the joy was in the stillness of that cottage. If you’re after a holiday where the highlight is mastering the art of bugger all, book yourself in. You won’t regret it – or if you do, blame the hot tub; it’s far too persuasive. |
