About Ambleside
I’ll never forget the drive up to Ambleside last autumn – the leaves were turning that perfect fiery mix of gold and crimson, carpeting the roads like nature’s own welcome mat. Me and the missus piled into the car from Manchester, full of that buzzy anticipation you get before a Lakes getaway, dreaming of cosy nights in and misty morning walks. But about halfway, disaster struck: a cheeky pheasant decided to play chicken with our Fiesta, darting out from the hedgerow and sending us into a full-on swerve. Heart in my mouth, we pulled over, checked the wing mirrors (all intact, phew), and laughed it off with a quick thermos of tea. Classic Lake District initiation, that.

By the time we trundled into the serene countryside between Ambleside and Langdale, the sun was dipping low, painting everything in that soft, harvest glow that only October can muster. Spotting the property – this cracking ground-floor apartment, all tucked away for a proper peaceful retreat – we were chuffed to bits. First impressions? Spot on. It felt like stepping into a hug: warm, inviting, and dead handy for popping out to the nearby pubs and cafes without faffing about in the car.

Autumn shaped every minute of our stay, turning the ordinary into magic. Mornings started with mist rolling off the fells like smoke from a wizard’s pipe, perfect for wrapping up in scarves and heading out on those leisurely trails right from the door. We’d crunch through piles of fallen leaves, the air crisp and tangy with that earthy scent you can almost taste. One day, we hired bikes – nothing fancy, just sturdy ones from the local shop – and pedalled along paths alive with rustling bracken and the odd squirrel hoarding nuts like it was the end times. Hilarious watching me wobble on the hills, puffing like an old steam train, while she zoomed ahead, all smug.

Evenings were pure bliss, thanks to that seasonal chill urging us indoors. We’d wander to one of the cosy pubs for a pint of local ale and pie that stuck to your ribs, then back for a rummage in the kitchen, rustling up stews with whatever we’d nabbed from the shops – pumpkin soup one night, because why not lean into the season? The apartment’s spot meant we could amble to a cafe for elevenses, steaming mugs of hot chocolate topped with marshmallows that melted into autumnal heaven.

A highlight was driving just down to Grasmere – barely five minutes – for a mooch around Dora’s Field. The daffodils were long gone, but the trees were a riot of colour, and picturing Wordsworth pottering about there in his day felt dead poetic. We even tried a bit of fishing nearby, though my line stayed stubbornly empty; the fish were probably too busy fattening up for winter to bother with my amateur worms.

Sitting there one foggy evening, mug in hand, watching the light fade over the fells, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life back home’s all rush and screens, but out here, with autumn wrapping us in its golden hush, it hit me: we need more of this. Slowing down, breathing deep, letting the season remind you what matters. If you’re after a Lakes escape that feels like time borrowed from the world, this spot in Ambleside’s the ticket – especially when the leaves are falling. We’re already plotting a return for next year’s bonfire glow.
