About Ambleside
I’ll never forget the drive up to Hawkshead – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked off our Lake District getaway. We’d set off from Manchester full of beans, sandwiches packed and the sat-nav promising a breezy two hours. But oh no, halfway through Kendal, the heavens opened, turning the M6 into a proper skidpan. Then, just as we hit the twisty lanes towards Ambleside, my other half decided it was the perfect moment to argue over the playlist. Cue a frantic swerve to avoid a rogue sheep, and suddenly we’re pulled over on a verge, heart thumping, with rain lashing the windscreen and the dog whining in the boot. “This is it,” I thought, “our holiday’s cursed before it’s even begun.” But honestly, that little mishap just made the arrival all the sweeter.

By the time we trundled into Hawkshead, soaked but giggling, the village was glowing in that soft, post-rain light – you know, the kind that makes the Lakes look like a postcard. We were buzzing with anticipation, imagining cosy fires and hill walks, and pulling up to this stunning modern home right in the heart of it all felt like striking gold. It’s one of those places that hits you with great first impressions: sleek yet welcoming, with a nod to the area’s literary heroes like Beatrix Potter and Wordsworth woven into its vibe. Central spot too – we could’ve lobbed a stone (politely, mind) to the local shops and those cracking pubs that smell of real ales and fresh-baked scones.

Stepping inside after our soggy chaos was pure bliss. The place wrapped us up like a warm hug – think open spaces that let the Lakeland light flood in, and everything spot-on for kicking back. We dumped our bags, brewed a pot of tea, and within minutes were out exploring on foot. Hawkshead’s got that timeless charm: quirky tearooms, a hilltop church with views to die for, and the Beatrix Potter gallery just a stroll away, stuffed with her original sketches that make you feel like a kid again. We wandered the lanes, past ivy-clad cottages, and popped into a pub for a pint and some hearty Cumbrian stew. The landlady even chuckled at our sheep-dodging tale – “You’re Lakeland initiates now!”

That first afternoon, we kept it simple: a gentle amble down to the village green, where the air’s crisp with fell breezes, and a nosey around the Wordsworth-linked spots that whisper of daffodils and wandering clouds. No need for grand plans yet; the property’s location made it dead easy to soak it all up. Later, back home, we cracked open a bottle of wine on the patio, watching the sun dip behind the fells. Reflecting on it now, that arrival kerfuffle was a gift – it reminded me how the best holidays aren’t flawless, but full of those daft moments that bond you. If you’re after a spot that blends modern comfort with Hawkshead’s magic, this is it. We’re already plotting a return – sheep permitting!
