About Ambleside
I’ll never forget the drive up to Ambleside – we’d set off from the M6 full of beans, sandwiches packed and the satnav chirping away, only for it to chuck us into a proper Lakes snarl-up just past Kendal. Some cheeky diversion had us crawling along behind a tractor towing what looked like half a barn, and by the time we spotted the first slate roofs of the village, I was starving and ready to throttle the wheel. Still, that little mishap only built the anticipation – as we wound down the hill into Ambleside proper, the sun broke through the clouds, glinting off the fells like a proper welcome mat.

Pulling up to this lovely apartment, my heart did a little flip. Tucked just a short stroll uphill from the village centre, it promised all the convenience of being right in the thick of things – fantastic independent shops, cracking restaurants and cosy pubs just downhill – while being perfectly placed for those surrounding fells and lakes if the mood took us. But honestly? The mood never really did. It was spacious and comfy, spot-on for our little family crew, and from the off, it felt like the ideal spot to just... switch off.

We’d arrived buzzing with half-baked plans – a brisk yomp up Wansfell, maybe a potter round Rydal Water – but by the end of that first afternoon, unpacking bags in the sunlit living room, we’d already surrendered to the joy of doing bugger all. The garden sealed it: a proper suntrap with views over the rooftops to the misty hills beyond, fringed with pots of cheerful geraniums and a couple of weathered benches. I flopped into one with a cuppa and my battered copy of All Creatures Great and Small, while the kids sprawled on blankets with their comics, giggling over Herriot’s daft vet tales. No itinerary, no alarms – just the hum of bees and the distant bleat of sheep.

Lazy days blurred into one glorious haze. Mornings meant ambling down for fresh croissants from the bakery on the high street – sticky fingers and all – then back up for garden lounging. I’d lose hours reading, feet up, letting the world slow to the pace of a page-turn. Afternoons? More of the same: dozing in the shade, maybe a gentle wander to the village for ice creams from the posh parlour near the bridge over Stock Ghyll, or nipping into a pub for a shandy and people-watching. One evening, we even skipped the restaurant row altogether, cobbling together a picnic from the greengrocers’ finest – local cheeses, plump strawberries – and ate it right there in the garden as the sun dipped behind Loughrigg Fell, painting everything gold.

Reflecting on it now, that’s the magic, isn’t it? In a life that’s all rush and deadlines, this place handed us permission to pause. No epic hikes or box-ticking sights – just the simple bliss of slowing down, letting Ambleside’s gentle rhythm wash over us. We left fatter in the soul, lighter in the step, already plotting a return to do even less.
