the loft is a well-proportioned twin-level apartment in the charming, central lake district town of ambleside. historically, this apartment is of some significance as it was the former gallery space of the heaton cooper family of artists. occupying the second and third floors of a corner site, traditional lakeland stone building, the loft is very conveniently located for ambleside’s many attractions and shops, which are just a three minute walk from this large property. pubs and restaurants are also in close proximity, one of which - the very popular lily bar - is right on your doorstep.

About Ambleside
I’ll never forget the drive up to Ambleside – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and just as we hit the narrow lanes outside Kendal, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us looping round a farm track. Typical me, hadn’t checked the signal, and there we were, mud-splattered and bickering mildly over whose turn it was to faff with the map app. But as we finally crested the hill into town, the clouds parted just enough for a glimpse of those glassy fells, and my heart did a little flip. Ambleside was waiting, all twinkly lights and cosy promise.

Pulling up to our spot, right in the heart of things, I was buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation – you know, the kind where you imagine endless cups of tea and zero alarm clocks. It’s this brilliant twin-level apartment tucked into a corner building, dead central but with that proper Lakeland charm. Stepping inside, the first impressions were spot on: spacious rooms that swallowed us right up, perfect for our lot of four (plus the dog, who’d already claimed a rug). It’s got bags of character from its days as an artists’ gallery – you can almost feel the creative vibes lingering – and the location? Chef’s kiss. Three minutes’ stroll to the shops, and the Lily Bar literally on the doorstep, which became our go-to for a cheeky pint after a day out.

We settled in quick, unpacking amid the usual cottage-life chaos: kids’ wellies everywhere, me forgetting where I’d stashed the teabags. First morning, we wandered down to Stockghyll Falls, just a short puff up the path behind town. The water tumbling over mossy rocks, mist in the air – simple magic, that. Picnicked on the grass with cheese butties from the local bakery, laughing as the littlest one tried (and failed) to skim stones without splashing himself head to toe. Afternoon was pure lazy bliss: pottering round the independent shops on Market Street, picking up fudge and a quirky Lake District postcard for Nan. Dinner at a nearby pub – fish and chips all round, naturally – then back home for board games that descended into giggles and one epic Monopoly meltdown (mine, obviously).

One evening, as the sun dipped behind Wansfell Pike, I nipped out for a solo wander along the lake edge at Waterhead. The water lapping gently, families strolling with ice creams – it hit me then, that gentle pang of reflection. Life’s mad rush back home feels miles away here. We’re just pottering, making memories in the mess of it all: spilled milk on the kitchen floor, wet towels draped over chairs, the joy of everyone under one roof without a schedule in sight. No grand adventures needed; it’s these bits – the shared laughs over brekkie, the dog snoring by the fire – that recharge the batteries.

A few days of ambles (pun intended) to Bowness Knotts for a nose around the boats, low-level rambles with thermos flasks, and lazy lie-ins gazing out at the hills. The chaos? Part of the fun. Leaving felt bittersweet, but Ambleside’s got that pull – we’ll be back for more of this relaxed family magic before you know it.
