About Ambleside
I’ll never forget the drive up to Ambleside last month – we’d packed the car to bursting with kids’ wellies, a cool bag of picnic bits, and enough board games to survive a siege. Me and the wife were buzzing with that holiday anticipation, you know, windows down, radio blaring, dreaming of lazy Lake District days. Then, about 20 minutes from our turning, disaster struck: the satnav decided to have a midlife crisis and rerouted us down some narrow lane that looked like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. We ended up nose-to-tail with a flock of sheep, the little ones chanting “baa-traffic jam!” from the back. Classic us – always turning a straight shot into an adventure.

Finally rolling into the Esthwaite Valley, though, all that faded. First impressions? Magic. This delightful first-floor apartment sits right in the heart of the 5,000-acre Graythwaite Estate, surrounded by rolling countryside that makes you breathe deeper just looking at it. It’s proper homely inside – open-plan living with everything you need for a cosy family getaway, nothing fussy. We tumbled out onto the shared lawned area, jaws dropping at the views across green fields to Esthwaite Water, with forested hills stretching out like a postcard. The kids were off like shots, chasing each other while we cracked open a flask of tea. Romantic break? Aye, if you count stealing five minutes on a bench while the bairns exhaust themselves.

Settling in felt like slipping into an old favourite jumper. Mornings kicked off with brekkie chaos – toaster pinging, everyone squabbling over the last bit of marmalade, then out the door for gentle wanders. We pottered along the estate paths, spotting deer and picking blackberries (well, the ones that weren’t sour enough to pucker your face). A short hop into Ambleside – barely five minutes – and we were mooching round the shops, grabbing fudge from the village bakery and ice creams that dripped faster than the rain clouds gathered. One afternoon, we hired rowboats on Windermere’s edge, the littlest one giggling as we wobbled like ducks on a pond. “Dad, you’re rubbish at this!” she yelled, which was fair – I nearly capsized us fetching her dropped oar.

Evenings were pure bliss: barbecues on the lawn (weather permitting – we dodged a few showers with board games indoors), watching the sun dip behind the fells. There’s something about cottage life here that slows you right down – no schedules, just simple pleasures like a splash in the shallows of Esthwaite Water or a family conker tournament that ended in hugs and muddy knees. I had a quiet moment one dusk, sat on the grass with a brew, reflecting on how these daft, chaotic days are the ones that stick. We’re always rushing back home; here, time stretches like toffee. The kids didn’t want to leave, and neither did I. If you’re after a relaxed family break in the Lakes, this spot’s got it in spades – proper heartwarming stuff. Can’t wait to go back.
