About Ambleside
I’ll never forget the drive up to Ambleside – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked off our holiday. We’d piled into the car from Manchester, me navigating with my trusty phone, the missus at the wheel, and our two mates in the back nursing flasks of tea. The sat-nav, bless it, decided halfway through Windermere to throw a wobbly, rerouting us down some twisty back lane that had us white-knuckling it round corners with sheep scattering like confetti. Then, the pièce de résistance: a rogue pheasant shot out from nowhere, forcing an emergency brake that sent our picnic sandwiches flying into the footwell. We arrived at this charming little spot just outside Hawkshead – wait, no, scratch that, it was a side street off the centre of Ambleside proper, all quaint and tucked away – laughing like loons, covered in crumbs, and already knackered from the two-hour detour.

But oh, what a first impression! Pulling up to this comfy ground-floor apartment felt like stumbling into a hug after a long day. It’s the sort of place that whispers “relax” the moment you step in – perfect for a small gang like ours or a family not wanting the faff of stairs. We dumped our bags in the open-plan living space, and it was love at first sight: a proper social hub with an amply-equipped kitchen that had me eyeing up the pans like a kid in a sweet shop. “Right,” I declared, “I’m chef tonight!” – though my lot know full well that means pasta with a side of charred garlic bread.

Anticipation had been building all week – visions of Lake Windermere sparkling just a short stroll away, and here we were, keys in hand, ready to crack on. We cracked open a bottle of red straight away (well, after wrestling the cork out – another minor mishap when it pinged across the room). The dining table was begging for a feast, so we rustled up spag bol from the stocked cupboards, dishwasher primed for later. Post-dinner, we flopped onto the plush sofa, Smart TV flickering with some daft quiz show, while outside in the private courtyard, the bistro seating tempted us into a balmy evening. Crickets chirping, a gentle breeze – it was pure magic, especially after our road chaos.

Next morning, still buzzing from those first impressions, we wandered into Ambleside centre, just a hop away. Popped into Zeffirelli’s for coffee and their legendary pizza (saving room for more later, naturally), then ambled down to the lake for a flat-bottomed boat hire – nothing too adventurous after yesterday’s drive. We pootled about on Windermere, spotting herons and the odd paddleboarder wobbling hilariously. Lunch was fish and chips from a lakeside van, eaten on the shore with gulls eyeing us jealously.

Looking back, that bumpy arrival was the perfect icebreaker – turned what could’ve been a stressful start into non-stop giggles. It made me reflect: holidays aren’t about flawless plans, are they? They’re the mishaps that stick, the shared sandwiches-in-the-footwell stories you retell for years. This little apartment became our basecamp for it all – cosy, welcoming, and right in the heart of Lakeland loveliness. If you’re after a spot to unwind near Ambleside’s buzz without the crowds, you won’t go far wrong here. We’re already plotting a return, minus the pheasant detour.
