About Ambleside
I’ll never forget the drive up to Ambleside – we’d set off from the motorway full of beans, singing along to the radio, only for me to take a wrong turn just outside Windermere and end up in a queue of caravans crawling along like tortoises. Typical me, always relying on sat-nav but forgetting to charge my phone properly. Still, by the time we rolled into town, the anticipation was buzzing – those first glimpses of the fells rising up against the sky had us grinning like kids.

Pulling up to our duplex apartment right in the heart of Ambleside was a treat. There was this allocated off-road parking spot waiting for us, which felt like a proper luxury with cars wedged everywhere else. We dumped our bags and stepped inside to this cracking open-plan living space – sofas begging you to flop down, Smart TV ready for a binge, and those stunning views over the Grasmere hills stretching out the window. It was all so homely, just paces from the shops, pubs, and eateries, but honestly, we barely touched the car after that.

First morning, the weather was playing nice – bright blue skies, not a cloud in sight. We laced up our boots and headed straight out for Loughrigg Fell, that classic hike just a short stroll from the door. It’s only a couple of miles up, but the views from the top? Magic. You’re looking right over Grasmere lake, with the water sparkling like it’s showing off. We picnicked up there, cheese rolls and thermos tea, feeling like proper explorers. I even managed a little skip on the way down, though my knees reminded me I’m not 20 anymore.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour. Come afternoon, the clouds rolled in thick as fog over Windermere, and the rain started bucketing down. Our plan for a jaunt along the Ambleside to Grasmere path? Scrubbed. Instead, we dashed to the local pub for a warming pint and pie, laughing about how we’d packed shorts and sun cream like amateurs. It forced us to slow down, though – we wandered the high street instead, poking into bookshops and grabbing fresh scones from the bakery. That evening, back at the apartment, we dried off on the sofas, flicking on the TV for some rubbish quiz shows while the storm rattled the windows.

Next day, it cleared just enough for another go. We tackled the lower paths around Rydal Water, dodging puddles and muddy patches, the air so fresh it cleared your head. The weather flipped again mid-hike – hail one minute, sun the next – but that’s the Lake District for you. It made every clear spell feel like a gift. I found myself reflecting on the sofa that night, cuppa in hand, gazing at those hills. In the rush of life back home, I forget how good it is to just walk, get soaked, and laugh it off. No signals needed, just boots and a brolly.

By the end of the week, we’d notched up miles of trails – from easy ambles along Stockghyll Force to tougher slogs when the sun peeked out. The apartment was the perfect base, cosy and central, turning what could’ve been a soggy washout into a proper adventure. If you’re after hikes with a side of unpredictable weather, Ambleside’s your spot. We’re already plotting a return.
