About Ambleside
I’ll never forget the drive up to Ambleside – sat nav insisting we take a cheeky shortcut through some winding B-road that turned out to be more sheep than tarmac. We ended up with a wheel wedged in a pothole, laughing like idiots as a farmer with a flat cap towed us out with his tractor. Proper Lakeland welcome, that was. By the time we rolled into the village, hearts racing a bit from the near-miss, I was buzzing with that fizzy anticipation of a proper getaway. And then we spotted it – our little luxury loft apartment, tucked right in the bustling heart of Ambleside, all warm and inviting like a hug from an old mate. First impressions? Spot on. Cosy as anything with that wood-burning stove ready to chase away any chills, and views that had us grinning ear to ear. Perfect for just the two of us.

We’d booked it thinking we’d tick off the biggies – you know, a stroll round the shops, maybe a pint at a pub – but honestly, the magic happened when we ditched the map and let our feet wander. Ambleside’s got that knack for sucking you into its lanes, and we stumbled on hidden gems purely by accident. First afternoon, trying to find the bridge over Stock Ghyll, we veered off down a narrow path behind some cottages and ended up at this tucked-away waterfall cascade. Not the famous one everyone mobs, but a smaller, secret tumble of water rushing over mossy rocks, with not a soul in sight. We sat there for ages, feet dangling in the icy flow, feeling like we’d nicked a private slice of the Lakes.

Next day, fueled by a massive fry-up from a greasy spoon (veggie version for her, naturally), we got properly lost weaving through the back alleys off the main drag. That’s how we discovered this wee hidden garden spot – a forgotten churchyard with wonky gravestones and wildflowers spilling everywhere, right on the edge of the village. Picnicked there with cheese butties from the local deli, watching buzzards circle overhead. Pure bliss, and zero tourists snapping selfies. I had one of those gentle moments then, munching away, thinking how daft it is we’re always chasing Instagram hotspots when these quiet corners recharge you ten times better.

Evenings were for toasting toes by the stove, plotting the next ramble. One jaunt took us up a faint track from the village edge – no signs, just instinct – to a viewpoint over the lower fells with Ambleside twinkling below like fairy lights. Got a bit misty and turned back giggling, covered in mud, but that’s the joy of it. Another time, pottering near the lake’s fringe, we tripped over a tiny tearoom tucked in a side street, serving the fluffiest scones with clotted cream that’d make you weep. Who needs Michelin stars?

Looking back, that’s what made the stay – not the luxury trimmings (though they were lush), but those serendipitous detours. Getting lost in Ambleside isn’t a mishap; it’s the point. We left feeling rejigged, vowing to do it again sans sat nav. If you’re after a romantic bolt-hole that rewards the wanderer, this is your spot.
