About Ambleside
I’ll never forget the drive up to Ambleside – a proper Lakeland saga that had me cursing the satnav under my breath. We’d set off from the M6 full of beans, dreaming of fresh air and fell walks, but halfway through Kirkstone Pass, the heavens opened and traffic ground to a halt behind a sheep jam. Proper Cumbrian welcome, that – woolly roadblocks everywhere. By the time we crawled into town, I was knackered, the kids were bickering over the last Haribo, and my other half was eyeing me like I’d planned it all. Anticipation? Mate, I was just praying for a parking space.

Spotting the allocated bay was a minor miracle amid the drizzle, and we bundled out, lugging bags like pack mules. Fumbled the keys twice in the wet – classic me, always dropping something – but once inside, blimey, what a turnaround. This duplex apartment hit us like a warm hug: bright open-plan living with those massive Velux windows flooding the place with light, even on a grey afternoon. We kicked off our muddy boots in the hallway (genius touch, that), and there it was – sofa begging for a collapse, kettle on the go. First impressions? Spot on. Cuppa in hand, we flopped down and gawped at the views from the balcony: rolling hills, Ambleside rooftops stretching out like a postcard. “This is it,” I thought, “we’ve cracked it.”

The cream kitchen was a dream for lazy self-catering – electric oven and hob ready for action, dishwasher to save the washing-up wars. We rustled up beans on toast (gourmet, obviously), then carried plates out to the balcony as the rain eased. Uncorked a cheeky bottle of red to toast the chaos behind us, chatting about the adventures ahead. Kids claimed the twin room, we nabbed the king-size – both with those cosy bedside lamps for a late read if the mood struck. Showers? Two of ’em, steaming hot to rinse off the road grime. I caught myself in the mirror, looking a bit windswept and wiser: holidays like this remind you it’s the faff that makes the good bits shine, eh?

Next morning, we were out exploring, proper recharged. White Platts Miniature Golf round the corner had us in stitches – my putt went wildly off into the bushes, earning me “dad of the year” jibes. Popped into the Armitt Library and Museum for a quick history fix; those exhibitions on local artists had me hooked. Evening called for Zeffirellis – jazz vibes and a film, pint in hand, feeling like locals already. It’s all right on the doorstep, no faffing about with long drives. Days blurred into hill strolls, pub lunches at rustic spots serving proper home-cooked grub, and lazy Lake Windermere gawps just a short hop away. That arrival mayhem? Best icebreaker ever. If you’re after a cracking base for Lake District larks, this is your spot – chaos and all.
