About Ambleside
I’ll never forget the drive up to Ambleside – a proper Lakeland road trip, winding through those lush valleys with the radio blasting some indie tunes to keep the spirits high. We’d set off from the M6 full of anticipation, dreaming of crisp mornings and epic fell walks, but about halfway in, disaster struck: a sudden downpour turned the A591 into a bit of a river, and I managed to splash straight through a massive puddle right outside a café in Grasmere. Soaked windscreen and a soggy passenger seat later, we arrived laughing at my rubbish driving skills, but honestly, it just added to the adventure.

Pulling up to this gorgeous first-floor apartment bang in the heart of the village, my heart skipped a beat. Tucked away yet so central, with those jaw-dropping mountain views peeking through every window – it was love at first sight. A stylish one-bedroom haven, all Scandi-chic and cosy, perfect for us two. We dumped the bags, cracked open a brew, and just gazed out at the fells, already plotting our first hike. The anticipation built as we unpacked; this was going to be our quiet retreat after days of pounding the paths.

First morning, the weather gods smiled: blue skies, not a cloud in sight. We headed straight out for Stockghyll Force, just a stone’s throw behind the apartment. That gentle uphill ramble to the waterfall was pure magic – mist rising off the cascade, sheep bleating on the hillsides, and not another soul around. We felt like proper explorers, me snapping daft selfies while she pretended to be Wordsworth. Energised, we pushed on to Loughrigg Fell, scrambling up for those panoramic views over Grasmere and Rydal Water. Lunch was a cheeky picnic of cheese rolls from the village shop, devoured with the wind whipping our hair. Bliss.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour, doesn’t it? By day two, the forecast turned grim, and sure enough, horizontal rain lashed in as we eyed Wansfell Pike. Plan A out the window; instead, we adapted like pros, donning waterproofs for a muddy tramp along the Ambleside trails closer to home. The paths turned into streams, but there’s something oddly thrilling about battling the elements – puddles splashing, hoods up, giggling as we slipped about. We even spotted a rainbow arching over the lake, which felt like a cheeky reward.

One afternoon, holed up by the rain battering the windows, I had a proper moment of reflection. Curled up in the living room with a book and a cuppa, watching the clouds race over the mountains, I thought about how these trips remind me to slow down. Life back home’s a rush, but here, even when the hikes get rerouted by drizzle, it’s about embracing the chaos. We cooked up a storm in the kitchen that evening – pasta with local goodies – and planned a drier dawn assault on another local path.

By the end of the week, we’d notched up proper adventures: sunny summits, soggy slogs, and that unbeatable Lake District vibe. The apartment was the perfect base – welcoming, comfy, with views that made every rainy rethink worthwhile. If you’re after walks that test your wellies and your weather app, this is the spot. Can’t wait to go back.
