About Ambleside
I’ll never forget the drive up to Ambleside last month – we’d set off from the M6 full of beans, dreaming of those Lake District views, only for the sat-nav to chuck us onto some winding back lane behind a tractor doing about 10 miles an hour. By the time we arrived, I was gripping the wheel like it owed me money, but as we swung through those security gates and up the long drive, all that stress melted away. There it was, this grand old 19th-century mansion perched on the hillside, once a vicarage, surrounded by ten acres of lush grounds. Our ground-floor apartment was perfect – spacious for me and my mate with our other halves, all the comforts of home without the faff of cooking disasters back in London.

First impressions? Magic. We stepped in, dumped the bags, and cracked open a brew while peering out at the fells. The anticipation had been building for weeks – I’d been scrolling maps, plotting hikes like a proper anorak. Rydal Water was right there, practically on the doorstep, so we laced up our boots that very afternoon for a gentle wander around the lake. The sun was peeking through, turning the water all sparkly, and we felt like proper explorers. Little did we know the weather gods had other ideas.

Next morning, we tackled Loughrigg Fell – that classic Ambleside hike with panoramic views over Grasmere and Windermere. It started crisp and clear, perfect for a steady plod up the paths, stopping for selfies at the summit cairn where you can see for miles. I was chuffed, thinking, ‘This is why we do these trips.’ But halfway down, the clouds rolled in like uninvited guests, and suddenly it was horizontal rain. We dashed into a sheep shelter, laughing at our soggy state, faces windswept and daft. British weather at its finest – one minute paradise, next a full-on drenching. Plan B kicked in: a low-level stroll along the Rothay River back to town, dodging puddles and pretending we meant to get wet.

The next day was a cracker, though – blue skies begging for more. We headed to Wray Castle grounds for an easy lakeside loop, the kind of walk where you can chat nonsense without gasping for air. But true to form, by noon the mist descended, turning it into a moody, atmospheric tramp through the trees. We adapted, nipping into a tearoom in Ambleside for hot chocolate and flapjacks, watching day-trippers scurry by. It got me reflecting, sat there with steam rising from my cup: I’m always chasing the perfect hike, but it’s these curveballs – the sudden squalls forcing you to chill out – that make the Lakes unforgettable. No grand adventures needed; just good company and the ability to laugh when your socks are squelching.

By the end of the week, we’d notched up Fairfield’s lower slopes on a rare dry spell (stunning ridges, proper leg-burner), and even a rainy ramble up to Rydal Caves, torches in hand like kids on a dare. The apartment was our rainy-day haven – cosy evenings with takeaways from town, plotting the next outing. If you’re after walks that flex with the weather, this spot’s a gem. We left knackered but buzzing, already plotting a return. Who needs guarantees when the unpredictability’s half the fun?
