About Ambleside
I finally made it to Ambleside after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive from the M6. Picture this: me, my other half, our scruffy border collie Pippa, and a boot stuffed with walking boots, wellies, and enough snacks to feed a small army. We'd set off full of beans, playlist blaring, but then the satnav decided to have a midlife crisis just as we hit the twisty lanes around Windermere. It rerouted us down a single-track road that was basically a sheep's personal racetrack – one ewe stared me down like I'd gatecrashed her spa day, and I had to reverse half a mile with Pippa barking her head off. By the time we spotted the turn-off, I was sweating more than on a proper fell scramble, and we'd spilled half the crisps across the back seat. Classic us, really – holidays don't start until something goes pear-shaped.

Pulling up outside this cracking spot, though, all that palaver melted away. If you're after a taste of Lakeland grandeur without the fuss, this is it: a spacious apartment tucked into a magnificent 16th-century gentleman's residence, just a five-minute wander from Ambleside's bustling heart. We had our own ground-floor private entrance, perfect for dumping muddy gear and even stashing bikes if you're that way inclined. Lugging our bags up the lovely staircase to the first-floor apartment, I was already grinning – it opened straight into this elegant open-plan lounge and dining room with massive Georgian windows flooding the place with light. Stepping onto the small viewing balcony felt like unwrapping a gift: fabulous views across the fells, with the sun dipping behind them just so. I stood there a minute, mug of tea in hand (kettle was on before the bags were unpacked), thinking, 'Blimey, we've landed on our feet.'

The modern kitchen sealed the deal – sleek, with cracking views towards the Fairfield Horseshoe that had me plotting tomorrow's hike before we'd even sat down. Both bedrooms are proper luxurious, each with its own bathroom, so no queuing at 7am after a late night. Pippa approved too, sniffing around like she'd owned the place for years, and there's space for kids or babies if that's your crew. Private parking right outside? Chef's kiss – no circling Ambleside's mad one-ways like headless chickens.

First impressions? Bloody marvellous, sorry, I mean spot on. We wandered down to the village that evening – Ambleside's got that perfect mix of contemporary buzz and proper Lakeland character, all wrapped in a spectacular backdrop of fells. Grabbed fish and chips from a takeaway, sat by Stock Ghyll Force as the light faded, and just soaked it in. Reflecting now, that arrival kerfuffle was a right laugh – reminds me I need to chill out more, let the Lakes work their magic instead of stressing the small stuff. Can't wait to lace up for Loughrigg Fell at dawn. If you're pondering a Lake District jaunt, this setup's a dream – chaos and all.
