About Ambleside
I’ll never forget the drive up to Ambleside last month – me behind the wheel of our trusty old estate car, sat-nav chirping away like it knew best, and my other half navigating with a map that might’ve been from the ark. We were buzzing with that holiday anticipation, you know, the kind where you’re picturing cosy evenings by a fire and epic walks. But no, about ten miles out, I took a wrong turn onto some narrow lane that had us scraping past hedges and convinced we’d end up in someone’s farmyard. A proper comedy of errors – I was sweating, she was laughing, and we finally doubled back with the help of a sheepdog who looked at us like we were idiots. Still, it set the tone: this trip was about stumbling into the unexpected.

Pulling into Grasmere, right in the heart of it all, our first glimpse of the cottage had us grinning like kids. It’s this thoughtfully designed beauty spread over three floors, perfect for families or mates to kick back. You step in through the ground-floor boot room – genius after a muddy hike – and straight into a light, airy sitting room with a corner sofa that practically hugs you, soft furnishings glowing under table lamps and that electric stove giving off a welcoming warmth. The kitchen’s got this fresh whitewashed vibe, and next door the dining room’s so vibrant it perks you up whether you’re nursing a morning coffee or toasting the evening with a glass of wine. Views across the village to those rolling hills? Chef’s kiss. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle, already smitten.

But honestly, the real magic kicked off when we ditched the tourist trails and let ourselves get properly lost. Ambleside and Grasmere are rammed with the obvious spots, but we were after hidden gems, those off-the-beaten-path finds you only snag by accident. First afternoon, we wandered off behind the village, no map, just following a faint path that twisted uphill. Ended up at this tucked-away tarn – not the big famous ones, but a glassy little pool ringed by ferns, with not a soul in sight. We picnicked on cheese sarnies from the local bakery, feet dangling in the water, watching buzzards circle. Pure bliss, and I thought, blimey, when did I last switch off like this?

Next day, a wrong turn down a bridleway near Loughrigg led to the best accidental discovery: a wildflower meadow bursting with butterflies, overlooked by a crumbling old wall that screamed secret garden. We sprawled out for hours, spotting rare orchids (or so we told ourselves). Even got chatting to a local walker who tipped us off about a hidden waterfall just a scramble away – thundering down into a peaty pool, mist rising like fairy dust. Chilly dip? No ta, but the roar of it drowned out all my work stresses.

One evening, looping back via a forgotten churchyard path, we stumbled on a viewpoint over the village that made the lights twinkle like stars had fallen early. Sat there with flasks of tea, reflecting on how getting lost isn’t daft – it’s the only way to uncover these pockets of Lake District gold. Me, the eternal planner, learned to embrace the meander. We left with muddy boots, fuller hearts, and a list of secret spots for next time. If you’re heading that way, skip the guidebook and let the lanes lead you. You won’t regret it.
