About Ambleside
I’ll never forget the drive up to Ambleside last month – a proper Lakeland adventure that started with me taking a wrong turn just past Windermere, ending up on some narrow lane that had me white-knuckling the wheel as sheep ambled by like they owned the road. Typical me, always relying on sat-nav but forgetting to charge the phone properly. Still, by the time I crested that final hill, the anticipation was buzzing – those first glimpses of the fells and the promise of a cosy hideaway had me grinning like a kid at Christmas.

Pulling up to the cottage at the foot of Loughrigg Fell, with the River Rydal chuckling alongside, I was smitten straight away. It’s this charming little spot tucked into the historic ‘Stepping Stones’ residence, once home to the Wordsworth family no less – you can feel the poetry in the air. The kids tumbled out first, eyes wide, already plotting their assault on those famous stepping stones just a hop away. Proper magic, that.

But honestly, the real joy of the place was doing sod all – and I mean that in the best possible way. After the faff of unpacking (and me spilling tea on the doormat, naturally), we claimed the garden as our kingdom. It’s a suntrap, framed by the river’s gentle burble and those soft fells rolling off into the distance. I’d flop into a lounger with a pot of tea and a dog-eared novel – something light and forgettable, the kind you don’t mind leaving behind if a sudden shower hits. The hours melted away: watching clouds drift, listening to birdsong, occasionally yelling at the kids not to topple into the water mid-jump. Blissful inertia.

One lazy afternoon, I wandered down to the stepping stones myself, barefoot and carefree, balancing like a wobbly tightrope walker. Nearly went in, of course – a splashy reminder that I’m not as nimble as I like to think. Sat there afterwards with a book, feet dangling, reflecting on how we rush about back home, always chasing the next thing. Here, time stretches out; you breathe deeper, notice the way the light shifts on the water. No need for grand plans.

Evenings were pure indulgence. A gentle stroll into Ambleside – it’s mere minutes away – for an ice cream from one of those brilliant village shops, or a pint in a traditional pub where the locals swap stories. We’d pop into the quirky Bridge House for a giggle, that tiny 17th-century oddity perched over the stream, then meander back as the sun dipped. No cinema trips or live music for us; we were too knackered from all that lounging. Back at the cottage, it was homemade supper on a tray, more reading by the window, maybe a cheeky GandT as the stars popped out.

Those few days recharged my batteries like nothing else. Slowing down in a place like this, surrounded by nature’s hum, makes you realise how much richer life feels when you just… stop. If you’re after a holiday that’s all about the quiet joys, this is it. I’m already plotting a return.
