About Ambleside
I’ll never forget the drive up to Ambleside – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and me cursing the satnav for sending us down a cheeky little lane that turned out to be more puddle than path. We’d left the motorway in high spirits, buzzing with that pre-holiday anticipation, imagining cosy evenings by a fire with fells rolling out like a postcard. But halfway there, the car decided to throw a minor wobbly, sliding into a verge with a squelch that had us laughing through gritted teeth. A quick tow from a passing farmer (cheers, mate) and we were back on track, arriving just as the clouds parted for a golden sunset.

First impressions? Magic. The place is over the first and second floors of a beautiful building from 1892, with stunning views over the surrounding fells that hit you right in the chest. We hauled our bags up the stairs, hearts lifting with every step, and stepped into this warm, welcoming nook that felt like it was waiting just for us. No grand entrance, just pure Lakeland charm.

But here’s the thing – we’d planned this getaway to do loads: hikes up Wansfell Pike, boat trips on Windermere, the full tourist whirl. Instead, we did bugger all, and it was bliss. Absolute, unadulterated joy in doing very little. Mornings started late, with tea brewed strong and mugs cradled on the sofa, staring out at mist-cloaked hills that seemed to whisper ‘stay put’. The garden down below was our secret haven – a tidy patch of green with benches tucked under dripping trees, perfect for flopping with a book. I devoured three paperbacks that week, losing hours to dog-eared pages while sheep ambled by, oblivious to my existential musings.

Afternoons blurred into lazy hazes. We’d wander five minutes to Stockghyll Falls for a gentle splash of water and fresh air, but never strayed far – why would we, when the views from the windows were better than any postcard? Evenings meant simple suppers: cheese on toast, a bottle of red, and board games that descended into giggles over nothing. One night, I caught myself just sitting there, feet up, watching the light fade over Loughrigg. It hit me then – I’m always rushing, aren’t I? Chasing the next thing. Here, time stretched like toffee. No deadlines, no notifications, just the soft tick of a clock and the joy of slowing right down.

There was that one hilarious moment when I tried ‘mindful breathing’ from a book, only to snort-laugh at a squirrel nicking birdseed like a furry bandit. Proper daft, but it summed us up – no pressure, all pleasure. Leaving felt like waking from a dream, but we drove off lighter, already plotting a return to our lazy Lakeland bubble. If you fancy recharging without the faff, this is your spot. Pure heaven.
