About Ambleside
I’ll never forget the drive up to Ambleside – we’d left the M6 in high spirits, belting out old tunes, but then hit a classic Lake District downpour just past Kendal. The wipers were working overtime, and I took a wrong turn onto one of those narrow lanes, ending up splashing through a puddle that nearly soaked a passing cyclist. Whoops! A quick U-turn and a sheepish apology later, we were back on track, hearts racing a bit more than they should for a holiday jaunt. By the time we crested the hill into Waterhead, the rain had cleared, and there it was: Windermere sparkling like a promise of good times ahead.

Pulling into the private parking spot for our third-floor penthouse apartment felt like striking gold – just 50 metres from the lake shore, with those jaw-dropping views waiting upstairs via the lift (stairs? Not today, after that drive). Stepping inside, the open living space hit us with sunlight pouring through the windows, Lake Windermere stretched out below like our own private postcard. Central yet peaceful, with bars and shops right nearby – perfect for a food-obsessed lot like us.

First order of business: stocking up. We wandered the couple of minutes to Waterhead’s little shops, grabbing local cheeses, crusty bread, and a slab of that creamy Lakeland butter from the deli. Back at the flat, I fancied myself a chef, whipping up a ploughman’s lunch on the sleek kitchen counter – cheddar, pickle, and apples so crisp they crunched like autumn leaves. It was messy (I’m no MasterChef), but gazing out at the lake while munching? Pure bliss. That evening, we hit one of the nearby pubs for fish and chips – golden batter, peas mushy just right, and a pint of proper ale that warmed us from the inside. The chatter of locals about the day’s hikes made it feel like we’d slotted right in.

Next morning, anticipation bubbled as we strolled to Ambleside centre for the market buzz. The stalls overflowed with Cumbrian treats: venison sausages, fudge that stuck to your teeth, and fresh scones with clotted cream. I loaded up on smoked mackerel and herbs, dreaming of a lakeside breakfast. My cooking attempt that afternoon? A heroic fail – I overdid the potatoes for a shepherd’s pie, turning them into gluey mash. Laughed it off with a cuppa, reflecting on how holidays remind you it’s the faffing about in the kitchen that makes memories, not perfection. Husband polished it off anyway, bless him.

Pub-hopping became our rhythm. The Golden Rule down the road served up cracking pies – steak and ale, flaky pastry that flaked everywhere – paired with Windermere views from their beer garden. Another night, we tried the cosy bar just outside, devouring Lakeland lamb hotpot, rich and hearty, with crusty bread to mop up the gravy. One evening, we even caught the lake cruise to Bowness (a quick hop), grabbing fish finger butties from the onboard café – simple, salty perfection.

A gentle self-nudge hit me mid-week over a solo coffee, staring at the fells: amid all this grazing, I’ve promised myself to walk it off next time, not just dream about it from the penthouse windows. Food stole the show here – markets, mishmash meals, and pub feasts – leaving us stuffed, smiling, and already plotting a return. Ambleside, you’ve got my tastebuds hooked.
