About Ambleside
I’ll never forget the drive up to Ambleside – a proper Lakeland adventure that started with me taking a wrong turn just past Kendal, thanks to my rubbish sense of direction and the satnav deciding to throw a wobbly. We ended up on some narrow lane with sheep glaring at us like we’d gatecrashed their picnic, but it only added to the excitement. The kids were buzzing in the back, singing along to some daft playlist, and as the fells came into view, that familiar holiday buzz kicked in. Lake Windermere was shimmering ahead, and suddenly we were there, pulling up to this cracking contemporary apartment right in the heart of Ambleside, just a stone’s throw from the lake shore.

First impressions? Spot on. It’s sleek and modern inside, with all the comforts you need after a long drive – think plush sofas, a telly bigger than our living room one at home, and a kitchen that didn’t look like it’d survived a war. Central location too, so no faffing about with parking; we dumped the bags and were out exploring in minutes. The kids declared it the best base ever, and I had to agree – no creaky stairs or dodgy Wi-Fi to dampen the mood.

We settled into that easy cottage life rhythm straight away, the kind of holiday where chaos meets bliss. Mornings kicked off with brekkie chaos: me burning the toast while the little ones fought over the last bit of cereal, then we’d wander down to the lake for a splash about. One afternoon, we hired a rowboat from the little jetty nearby – pure comedy gold as my other half rowed us in circles, the kids giggling like mad while I pretended to be the captain. We picnicked on the shore with cheese butties and flasks of tea, watching the boats chug by. Simple pleasures, but they hit different in that fresh mountain air.

Afternoons were for pottering around Ambleside’s lanes – nipping into Stockghyll Falls for a short walk up the path, where the water tumbles down like it’s in a hurry. The kids loved chasing each other over the stepping stones, getting sopping wet and loving every second. We grabbed fish and chips from the local spot, scoffing them on a bench overlooking the water, grease dripping everywhere. Evenings back at the apartment were cosy heaven: board games that descended into arguments (sorry, Monopoly), then collapsing on the sofa with hot chocolate, listening to the faint hum of the town outside.

There was this one quiet moment, staring out the window at dusk with the lake turning all pink and gold, when I caught myself thinking how these daft, messy days are what recharge the batteries. Work stress? Forgotten. Family squabbles? Sorted with a hug and a biscuit. It’s the gentle chaos of it all – spilled milk, muddy boots by the door, endless cups of tea – that makes a family break here feel like magic. We left with full hearts and promises to return, already plotting the next mishap-filled jaunt to Ambleside.
