Exploring Ambleside
I’ve just come back from the most gloriously lazy week in a cracking holiday cottage in Ambleside, and honestly, it’s made me question my entire hustle-and-bustle life back home. Picture this: a cosy stone-built gem tucked just on the edge of the village, with those classic Lakeland views over misty fells and a private hot tub bubbling away like it’s got nothing better to do. We arrived on a drizzly Friday – typical Lake District welcome – and from the off, the plan was simple: do bugger all, and love every minute of it.

The cottage was pure bliss. Think plush sofas piled high with cushions, a wood-burning stove that we lit on day one and barely let die all week, and a kitchen stocked with everything you’d need for lazy brekkies of toast and marmalade. No grand adventures here; we’d amble down to the village for supplies – a quick stop at the local bakery for their legendary sausage rolls or a wander past the boathouses on Windermere – then scuttle back to base. Ambleside’s got that perfect small-town charm without demanding you exert yourself. You can hear the gentle lap of the lake if you’re lucky with the wind, and the air smells of damp earth and sheep, which is oddly comforting.

The hot tub? Oh mate, that was the star of the show. Perched on a private deck with views straight across to Wansfell Pike, it became our daily ritual. Morning cuppa in hand, sink in at 10am, letting the jets knead away any lingering city tension. Come evening, a glass of local Hawkshead ale or a cheeky gin and tonic, and we’d bubble away as the sun dipped behind the hills, turning the water all golden. I must’ve spent hours there, staring at nothing much, just watching clouds scud across the sky. One afternoon, I nodded off mid-soak – woke up to a robin eyeballing me from the fence like I was the laziest human he’d ever seen. Fair play, he had a point.

Reading was my other vice. I’d claimed the window seat in the lounge, a nook with a sheepskin rug and endless vista of rolling green. Armed with a battered copy of *Swallows and Amazons* – fitting for these parts – I’d lose myself for hours. No phone, no emails, just the tick of the clock and the occasional bleat from a passing herd. The joy of it! Back home, I’m forever scrolling or chasing deadlines, but there, time stretched out like warm toffee. I’d surface for a cuppa, realise it was lunchtime already, and think, “Blimey, half the day’s gone and I’ve achieved sod all.” Perfect.

There were these quiet moments of reflection that snuck up on me. One rainy afternoon, hot tub abandoned for the sofa, I watched rain streak the windows and pondered how I’d turned into such a doer. Work, gym, social media – it’s all noise. Here in Ambleside, doing very little felt like the ultimate luxury. I caught myself smiling at the simplicity: a perfect nap after lunch, the satisfaction of a slow-cooked stew bubbling away while we read by the fire. Another evening, as stars pricked the velvet sky, I reflected on how slowing down lets you actually *see* things – the way the fells soften in twilight, or how content you feel with just good company and a full belly.

We did venture out once, for a gentle stroll along the Ambleside waterfront, but even that was half-arsed – stopping every five minutes to admire herons or skip stones. Back at the cottage, it was pyjamas by 7pm, more reading, and an early night. No FOMO, no regrets. If you’re after a holiday that recharges your soul without breaking a sweat, book yourself into one of these Ambleside rentals. Trust me, the art of buggering about in a hot tub with fells for company might just be the best holiday you never knew you needed. I’m already plotting a return.
