About Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Lake District – me behind the wheel, sat-nav chirping away, and a boot full of snacks we’d never eat. We’d set off from the Midlands full of beans, dreaming of misty fells and proper pub grub, but about an hour in, disaster struck. A rogue sheep decided our lane was prime grazing spot, and I slammed on the brakes just in time. Heart thumping, we laughed it off with a quick brew at a services café, but it had us buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation. By the time we wound our way towards Pooley Bridge, windows down and Lake Ullswater peeking through the trees, I was grinning like an idiot. First impressions? Magic. The sun dipped low over the water, turning everything golden, and there it was – our little holiday apartment, tucked into a peaceful park just begging us to unwind.

It’s a cosy two-bed number, perfect for us lot – me, the missus, and the two lads who are suddenly too cool for family holidays. Nothing flash, just welcoming with that lived-in charm you get in these spots. We dumped the bags and cracked open a window to let the valley air flood in. The plan? Absolutely nowt. After months of rushing about, this was our chance to do bugger all, and boy, did it feel grand.

First morning, I shuffled out to the garden with a cuppa, steam curling up in the crisp air. It’s a proper suntrap, that garden – picnic benches, a bit of lawn, and views straight across to the fells. I plonked myself down with a dog-eared copy of Wordsworth’s poems (cheesy, I know, but when in Rome, or Ullswater). The missus joined with her Kindle, and we just sat there, toes wiggling in the grass, listening to birdsong and the distant bleat of lambs. No schedules, no alarms. Lunch was a lazy picnic of cheese sarnies from the on-site shop – they’ve got all the basics, plus a decent bar for a pint later if the mood strikes.

Afternoons blurred into reading marathons under a brolly when the odd shower rolled in. The lads mooched about, one with a book on local ghosts, the other sketching the hills. We wandered down to Pooley Bridge once, just a short stroll for a riverside amble and a sneaky ice cream from one of those cosy pubs. No big hikes, mind – though we did eye up the ancient bits at Moor Divock, all brooding stones and mystery, barely a mile off. But mostly? We stayed put. Evenings in the garden as the sun set, cracking open a bottle from the bar, chatting rubbish till the stars popped out.

One quiet moment hit me hard, sprawled on a lounger with the paper forgotten on my lap. Life’s a right whirl, innit? Jobs, kids’ footie, endless emails. Here, time stretched out lazy as a cat in the sun. I caught myself smiling at nowt, properly content. No regrets about skipping Aira Force or Dalemain’s gardens – they’re close enough for another trip. This was about slowing right down, breathing deep, and savouring the simple joy of a garden, a good book, and family close by. Best holiday in ages. If you’re after proper rest, get yourself here. You won’t want to leave.
