About Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to Keswick last autumn – the leaves were turning that perfect fiery mix of gold and crimson, carpeting the roads like nature’s own welcome mat. Me and the missus piled into the car from Manchester, full of that buzzy anticipation you get before a proper Lakes getaway. But typical me, I took a wrong turn just past Penrith, ending up on some winding back lane that had us giggling nervously as the sat-nav threw a wobbly. “Recalculating,” it kept chirping, while sheep eyed us suspiciously from the verges. We arrived a tad later than planned, but boy, was it worth it.

Pulling up to our three-storey maisonette, right in the thick of things near the market square, I felt that instant hit of holiday magic. It’s this stylish spot that screams modern comfort – think plush furnishings, spot-on bathrooms, and a kitchen kitted out for lazy mornings with proper coffee. From the off, the autumn vibes wrapped around us like a cosy scarf. The air was crisp, that bracing chill that makes your cheeks glow, and the fells loomed misty and golden in the distance, begging to be explored.

First morning, we wandered down to Derwentwater, just a short stroll away. The lake was a mirror of amber trees and brooding skies, with leaves crunching underfoot like the world’s best ASMR. We hired a rowboat – pure genius in October, when the summer crowds have scarpered and it’s just you, the water, and the occasional honk of migrating geese. I nearly tipped us over trying to snap a selfie with Friar’s Crag in the background, earning a proper eye-roll from the wife. “Stick to land, you plank,” she laughed. Lunch was fish and chips from a stall by the water, eaten on a bench with steam rising in the cool air – simple perfection.

Afternoons were for ambling Keswick’s trails. We tackled part of Catbells, the autumn sun filtering through the branches like fairy lights, turning the whole valley into a painting. The colours were bonkers – russets, oranges, and those deep purples on the higher slopes. No midges to bother us either, just that fresh, earthy scent you only get when the season’s shifting. Evenings back at the maisonette were bliss: firing up the oven for a roast (that kitchen made it dead easy), then curling up with a glass of wine, watching the square’s lights flicker on through the window. One night, the market was still buzzing with stalls selling hot mulled cider and pumpkin pasties – we scoffed a few, feeling all festive already.

Reflecting on it now, that autumn stay was a gentle nudge to slow down. In the rush of daily life, I forget how a change of season can reset you – the way falling leaves make you appreciate the quiet moments, or how a chilly walk sharpens the joy of coming home to a warm spot. Keswick in October? It’s not just a holiday; it’s a love letter to slowing down and letting nature do the talking. We’re already plotting a return – winter next, perhaps, for those frosty fells.
