About Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to Bowness – we’d packed the car to the gills with wellies, board games and enough snacks to feed a small army, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a cheeky detour down some narrow lane that had me white-knuckling the wheel while the kids cheered like it was a rollercoaster. “Mum, are we lost yet?” my youngest piped up from the back, munching on crisps. Turns out it was just one of those classic Lake District moments, and by the time we crested the hill into the conservation area, hearts were racing with that proper holiday buzz. Spotting our welcoming, stylish and romantic cottage-style apartment perched there, overlooking the bustling village with those cracking views straight to Lake Windermere and the Langdale Pikes, well, it was love at first sight. The anticipation melted into pure grin-mode as we piled out, bags tumbling everywhere.

First impressions? Spot on. It felt like stepping into someone’s cosy dream pad – perfect for our family of four, with just enough space to sprawl without feeling echoey. We dumped the gear and cracked open the windows to that fresh fells air, the kind that makes you breathe deeper. No faffing about with check-ins; it was all keys in hand and straight into cottage life chaos. The kids claimed the sofa for an impromptu fort-building session using cushions and picnic rugs, while I nipped to the kitchen to rustle up tea and scones from the local bakery down the hill – proper job, with clotted cream that didn’t stand a chance.

Our days slipped into this blissful rhythm of simple pleasures. Mornings kicked off with brekkie on the balcony, watching rowers skim across Windermere like tiny dots of determination, the mist lifting off the lake as the pikes loomed all dramatic in the distance. We’d wander down to Bowness front, dodging the donkey rides and ice cream queues – my lot went mad for the World of Beatrix Peter Rabbit stuff, hopping about like they’d escaped from a storybook. One afternoon, we hired a little rowing boat from the pier, the littlest one giggling hysterically as we splooshed oars everywhere and nearly capsized chasing ducks. Pure, unfiltered joy, that – no grand plans, just paddling about till our arms ached and bellies rumbled for fish and chips wrapped in paper from a van by the water.

Evenings were the best bit, though. Back at the apartment, we’d light the fire (after a minor panic when the matches hid themselves), huddle up with hot chocolate and play Cluedo till bedtime arguments erupted over who-done-it. There was this one moment, tucking the kids in after a day of hill-walking up to the viewpoints behind the village, where I caught my reflection in the window – windswept hair, rosy cheeks, feeling properly alive for the first time in ages. Work stress? What work stress? It hit me then: these messy, magical family breaks are what recharge the batteries, aren’t they? No Instagram perfection, just us lot making memories amid the lovely disorder.

We didn’t venture far – why would you, with all that right on the doorstep? A gentle stroll to the Old England for a pint and pie, or pottering through the lanes to Hill Top if the mood took us. Leaving felt brutal, but as we trundled back down those same twisty roads, car groaning under souvenir weight, I was already plotting the next escape. Lake District cottage life? It’s the antidote to real life, hands down.
