About Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Lake District – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and then, just past Penrith, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a scenic detour through some narrow lanes that had me gripping the wheel like a learner. We were both knackered from the M6 crawl, but as we crested that final hill and Keswick came into view, with Derwentwater shimmering below, all was forgiven. The anticipation built – would the place live up to the photos? It did, and then some.

Pulling up to the cottage, a cosy detached number with a welcoming vibe, felt like slipping into an old friend’s hug. The garden was the star from the off – wildflower meadows rolling down to the water’s edge, with benches tucked under apple trees begging you to plonk yourself down. We dumped the bags, cracked open a brew, and that was it: holiday mode activated. No grand plans, just the joy of doing bugger all, properly.

The first morning, I wandered out in my slippers (yes, really) with a cuppa, watching mist lift off the lake. It was one of those moments where you realise how wired you’ve been – emails pinging, deadlines nagging – and suddenly, poof, it’s all irrelevant. I grabbed my battered copy of a Peter Mayle paperback I’d been meaning to read for years, settled into a lounger in the garden, and lost three hours to Provençal escapades. Lunch was a lazy affair: cheese, crackers, and local chutney scoffed on the patio, with the only interruption being a cheeky robin eyeing up the crumbs.

Afternoons blurred into dozing under the dappled shade, the garden alive with butterflies and the gentle lap of water nearby. We’d potter about, maybe stretch the legs for a short stroll along the shore path – nothing strenuous, just enough to feel the fresh air fill your lungs – then back for more reading. I polished off that book and started another, something light and Lake District-y about hill farmers, chuckling at the mishaps that mirrored our own sat-nav fiasco. Evening brought simple suppers cooked on the hob – pasta with whatever veg we’d grabbed from Keswick market – eaten outside as the sun dipped, painting the fells pink.

There was this one evening, glass of wine in hand, staring at the hills, when I had a proper think. Life’s a rush, innit? Chasing promotions, ticking boxes, but here, slowing right down felt like the real luxury. No FOMO, just contentment in the quiet. We even skipped the pub one night for board games by the fire – Monopoly, with me bankrupting myself hilariously early.

By the time we packed up, I wasn’t rested; I was reset. The Lake District has that magic for lazy cottage days, where the garden becomes your world and doing little feels like achieving everything. Can’t wait to go back and do even less.
