About Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to Bowness-on-Windermere last month – a proper British road trip, complete with that classic M6 snarl-up just past Lancaster. We’d set off full of beans, playlist blasting Fleetwood Mac, only for a cheeky diversion to turn our three-hour jaunt into four and a half. By the time we were crawling through the South Lakes traffic, stomachs rumbling and tempers a tad frayed, I was half-convinced we’d end up picnicking on the hard shoulder. But as we crested the hill into Bowness, the sun dipped behind the fells, casting this golden glow over Windermere, and suddenly it didn’t matter a jot. Anticipation bubbled up – we were here, finally.

Pulling up to our spot, we were gobsmacked by the first impressions. Contemporary luxury in this charming South Lakes hot-spot! High Lake is a well-appointed and well-equipped gem of a flat in the beating heart of Bowness, yet quietly situated off the main thoroughfares to give you the peace you need to get the very best out of your adventures. The Lakes await in this stylish little nest for four! Tucked away just enough to dodge the bustle, it felt like our own secret hideaway, with everything spot-on for kicking back.

Truth be told, that’s exactly what we did – or rather, didn’t do. After months of London hustle, this holiday was all about the joy of bugger all. No epic hikes, no boat races across the lake; just gloriously lazy cottage days that melted into one another. We’d wake to birdsong filtering through the windows, brew a pot of builder’s tea, and flop into those comfy sofas with books we’d been meaning to crack open for ages. I devoured a battered copy of All Creatures Great and Small – perfect for the setting – while the other half nodded off with a podcast about Lakeland sheep farmers. Bliss.

The garden was the real star, though. A sunny little patch with loungers and a table for al fresco lunches of cheese ploughman’s from the local deli. We’d spend hours there, feet up, watching fluffy clouds drift over the water. One afternoon, I caught myself staring at a squirrel raiding the bird feeder, chuckling at how it mirrored my own cheeky grabs for another biscuit. No rush, no plans – just the gentle lap of distant waves and the odd passerby’s dog having a sniff. It was pure poetry, that slowness.

There was a moment of gentle self-reflection on day three, sprawled in the garden with a GandT as the sun set. I realised how knackered I’d been, proper bone-tired from the daily grind. Here, time stretched out like toffee; worries about emails and deadlines just evaporated. We did venture out once, for a mooch around Bowness – grabbed fish and chips from a hole-in-the-wall, sat by the lake watching swans – but even that felt leisurely, no itinerary in sight.

By the end of the week, we’d done sod all and loved every second. High Lake gave us the perfect nest to slow right down, recharge, and remember what matters: good company, a cracking view, and the simple pleasure of nowt much at all. If you’re after the same, get yourself there – you won’t regret it.
