About Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Lake District – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and then, just past Kendal, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us down a narrow lane that was more puddle than path. We bumped along, me gripping the wheel, the kids in the back chanting “Are we there yet?” for the umpteenth time, until finally we emerged, soggy but laughing, onto the road to Bowness-on-Windermere. As we pulled into the tranquil grounds of this tucked-away spot, my heart lifted. There it was: a neatly furnished second-floor apartment, perfect for our family of six, with that open-plan vibe and pet-friendly setup that screamed “relax and make memories”. First impressions? Spot on – cosy, clean, and with views that whispered promises of lakeland magic.

I’d been buzzing with anticipation for days, picturing epic hikes along the fells, but the British weather had other ideas from the off. Day one dawned bright(ish), so we laced up our boots and headed out for a gentle stroll around Lake Windermere, just a mile or so away. The water sparkled under patchy sun, ducks quacking hellos, and our spaniel, Monty, bounding ahead like he owned the place. We ambled along the shore path towards Bowness, stopping for ice creams at a little kiosk – vanilla for the win, even if it was a tad brisk. Feeling bold, we pushed on to a circular walk up to Brant Fell, that cheeky little hill with panoramas over the lake that make you feel like you’ve earned a medal. The air was crisp, bracken crunching underfoot, and for a moment, it was pure bliss.

But oh, the weather – that great British leveller. By afternoon, clouds rolled in like uninvited guests, and what started as a drizzle turned into a proper downpour. Plans for a longer trek to Orrest Head? Scrubbed. Instead, we dashed back, laughing as we squelched through the common areas, dripping on the welcome mats. Huddled in the apartment with cups of tea and board games, Monty snoring by the radiator, it forced a bit of reflection. I realised I’d been so fixated on ticking off hikes that I’d forgotten how these curveballs make the best stories. The next day, undeterred, we tried a low-level loop from Bowness along the Dales Way path – misty views, sheep eyeing us suspiciously, and a rainbow peeking through as reward.

Day three brought sideways rain, so we pivoted to a sheltered wander through the woods near Fell Foot Park, just a short hop away. Leaves plastered to our hoods, we chatted nonsense and spotted kingfishers darting by the water. It wasn’t the grand adventure I’d mapped out, but it was ours – soggy socks, steaming mugs, and all. Back at the apartment each evening, drying off and planning tomorrow’s route over pasta, I felt properly grateful. The Lake District’s hikes are legendary, but it’s the weather’s whims that keep you on your toes. We left with muddy boots, fuller hearts, and a promise to return – next time, I’m packing extra waterproofs.
