About Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to Windermere – sat nav insisting we were nearly there, only for us to miss the turning and end up in some tiny lane with sheep glaring at us like we’d gatecrashed their picnic. A classic me moment, faffing about with the map on my phone while my other half sighed dramatically. But honestly, once we sorted ourselves and rolled through those electric gates into the private car park, all was forgiven. Pulling up to this charming contemporary ground-floor apartment right by Windermere Lake felt like winning the holiday lottery. The anticipation had been building all journey – visions of lazy lake views and proper Cumbrian scran – and the first impressions? Spot on. We tumbled in through the side door, chucked the prosecco in the utility room fridge, and straight into this bright open-plan living space. Breakfast bar for morning brews, a snug dining table, and those comfy Norwegian chairs perfect for collapsing into – it screamed “cosy nights in with good food ahead”.

First morning, we were up early, buzzing to explore the local grub scene. A quick wander down to Bowness-on-Windermere – just a couple of miles – and we hit the little market stalls near the lake. Fresh local cheeses, artisan breads, and the most incredible smoked trout that I couldn’t resist. Back at the apartment, I fancied myself as a proper chef, rustling up brunch on that handy breakfast bar: trout on toast with a dollop of herby cream cheese, washed down with filter coffee. Turned out half decent, though I did burn the edges – gentle reminder that I’m more enthusiastic eater than Michelin-starred maestro.

Evenings were all about the pubs. The Brown Horse Inn, a short drive away, became our go-to. Proper Lakeland fare there – venison pie with mash that melted in your mouth, and sticky toffee pudding so good it should be illegal. We’d stumble back (well, drive sensibly), bellies full, and crack open that chilled prosecco in the living area. One night, I attempted a full-on roast in the kitchen – grabbed lamb chops from the Windermere farm shop, new potatoes, and a bundle of veg. It was ambitious; the Yorkshires didn’t quite rise like they do in my dreams, but paired with a jug of gravy and a cheeky bottle of red at the dining table, it felt like a triumph. Laughing about my wobbly pud with the telly on low, those stress-less chairs cradling us – pure bliss.

We kept it local, popping into the Hole in T’ Wall pub for fish and chips one drizzly afternoon. Crispy batter, fat chips, mushy peas – textbook comfort food with a lake view. And the market runs were highlights: picking up Cumberland sausage rolls for snacks, homemade chutneys for cheese boards. Self-reflection hit me mid-holiday, sprawled in those chairs after a massive ploughman’s lunch I’d cobbled together. Holidays like this aren’t just about scoffing (though that’s a massive perk); they’re a nudge to slow down, savour simple meals with someone you love, and not sweat the small cooking disasters. We left fatter, happier, and already plotting the next feast-fest back here. If you’re after a spot where the food game’s as stunning as the scenery, this is it.
