About Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Lake District last autumn – that golden time when the fells turn into a riot of amber and rust, and the air smells like bonfires and damp earth. I’d piled the car with wellies, a flask of tea, and enough crisps to see me through a siege, but about halfway there, just past Kendal, the sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis. It kept directing me down these tiny lanes that were more puddle than path, and I ended up doing a three-point turn in a farmyard while a flock of sheep gave me proper judgemental stares. Laughable now, but at the time I was muttering about chucking the thing out the window. Still, it added to the anticipation – by the time I crested the hill towards Ambleside, heart racing a bit, the first glimpse of Lake Windermere shimmering under that crisp October sun had me grinning like an idiot.

Pulling up to this exclusive first-floor apartment right on the edge of Ambleside, I was gobsmacked. Spectacular views straight across the northern shores of the lake, with the water catching the late afternoon light like molten gold. It’s the sort of place that whispers “treat yourself” – cosy, stylish, and perfectly perched to make you feel like you’ve nicked a slice of heaven. First impressions? Spot on. I dumped my bags, cracked open a window, and just stood there breathing it all in, the chill autumn breeze carrying hints of woodsmoke from nearby cottages.

Autumn shaped every minute of that stay, turning the ordinary into magic. Mornings started with mist rolling off the lake like a lazy dragon’s breath, perfect for a slow brew and watching the colours shift from soft pinks to fiery oranges. I’d wander down to Ambleside’s bustling little centre – no more than a ten-minute stroll – where the shops were stacked with fudge and woolly hats, and the cafes did cracking flapjacks slathered in butter. One day, I hired a bike and pedalled along the quiet lakeside paths towards Bowness, the leaves crunching under my tyres, stopping to skim stones where the bracken glowed electric against the grey water. The season’s cooler edge meant fewer crowds, which suited me down to the ground – no queues for the ferries, just me, a thermos, and the hypnotic lap of waves.

Evenings were pure bliss. As the sun dipped, the fells across the water lit up in that fleeting, painterly glow, and I’d rustle up something simple in the kitchen – think hearty stew with local ale, while the windows framed it all like a living postcard. One night, a proper Lakeland downpour hit, drumming on the roof like it was auditioning for a symphony. I hunkered down with a book and a cheeky whisky, feeling a tad reflective. Holidays like this make you realise how daft it is to let the daily grind steamroll you – that pull of the seasons, the way autumn strips everything back to what matters: a good view, a warm spot, and no emails pinging.

We even squeezed in a brisk hike up Loughrigg Fell, close enough for an afternoon jaunt. The wind whipped through the turning oaks, cheeks rosy from the chill, and at the top, the whole of Windermere sprawled out below, patched with fiery trees and smoky valleys. Slipping on the muddy descent had me chuckling at my own clumsiness – middle age creeping in, perhaps? But what a way to feel alive. That week flew by, every moment tinted by autumn’s mellow magic, leaving me already plotting a return for next year’s blaze of colour. If you’re after a proper reset, this is the spot.
