About Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to Ambleside – we’d packed the car to the brim with wellies, maps and enough snacks to feed a small army, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just past Kendal. It insisted on sending us down a narrow lane that turned out to be more sheep superhighway than road, and we ended up reversing into a hedge with the kids in hysterics in the back. Classic family holiday start, innit? But as we finally rolled into the Lake District proper, with those misty fells unfolding around us, all the faff melted away. I was buzzing already, picturing cosy evenings by the window with a brew, watching the world go by.

Pulling up to our stylish cottage-style apartment in the Falls development felt like striking gold. Tucked away in a peaceful spot on Ambleside’s upper floors, it had this cracking view straight over Stockghyll Falls from the living space – proper heart-swelling stuff right from the off. We’d barely dropped our bags in the entrance hall (handy spot for kicking off muddy boots) before the kids legged it upstairs to gawp at the water tumbling down below. The place had this lovely calming vibe, all soothing colours and light pouring in, making it feel like a proper home from home. Private parking for two cars, one undercover, meant no parking nightmares either – a godsend after our earlier escapade.

Down on the first floor, the bedrooms were fresh and inviting: a double for me and the missus, a twin for the lads, and a luxurious bathroom with a shower over the bath that saw more use than a rainy day forecast. Upstairs was the star – that light, airy open-plan living area with sitting and dining spots framing the falls like a living painting. The sleek kitchen off to the side was a dream for knocking up simple suppers; granite finishes and all the gadgets you’d need for pasta nights or flapjacks. There was even a cloakroom leading out to a patio and a field garden – perfect for a morning cuppa in the fresh air.

We wasted no time settling into the relaxed rhythm. Mornings kicked off with brews and toast, gazing at the falls while the mist lifted off the hills. A five-minute stroll into the village had us pottering about – grabbing pasties from the bakery, browsing quirky gift shops, or stocking up at the supermarket. The kids loved the outdoor stores, trying on tiny rucksacks like proper explorers. We ambled easy walks straight from the door: up to Stockghyll Force for a splashy waterfall picnic, or along the lanes to Wray Castle if we fancied a bit more legwork – nothing too gnarly, just enough to work up an appetite.

Evenings were pure cottage chaos bliss. One night, we attempted a family roast in the kitchen, which descended into flour-fight madness, but it tasted brilliant. Then it was down to the pubs for a pint and pie, or that jazz club for a mellow vibe. The boys crashed out after films at one of the indie cinemas, while we snuck a quiet GandT on the patio. There was this gentle moment one dusk, watching the falls from the sofa, when I caught myself thinking how these simple bits – the laughter, the views, the no-rush days – are what recharge the batteries like nothing else. In all the holiday whirl, it’s the quiet family pockets that stick.

Ambleside nailed it for us: walks on tap, tasty spots everywhere, and a pad that felt like our own little fellside nook. If you’re after that unhurried Lake District magic with the family, you can’t go far wrong here. We’re already plotting a return – hedge mishaps and all.
