About Waterfall.
Perched at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside is a cracking base for exploring the central Lakes. Grasmere and Langdale Valley are just a short drive away. Enjoy cruises, boat trips and watersports on the lake, plus shops, pubs and eateries like Misto, Sheila’s Cottage and The Lily Bar. Waterhead’s lakeside park offers stunning views and a beach; a woodland stroll along Stock Ghyll leads to its enchanting waterfall. Famous for the rushbearing ceremony and the iconic 17th-century Bridge House, now a National Trust centre. Nearby attractions.
About Lake District
First impressions? Blimey, what a treat. It’s one of those luxury apartments in a smart development right in the heart of things – think spacious, stylish setup for six, perfect for our little gang of mates and their kids. We tumbled into a gleaming kitchen stocked with all the self-catering kit you could wish for: massive fridge, oven, hob, and a dishwasher that became my best mate after a day of muddy boots. The living-dining space had a big table for plotting adventures over fish and chips, then plush sofas for collapsing in front of the telly. Upstairs, three cracking bedrooms, including a king-size master with its own en-suite – pure bliss after traipsing about. But the real magic? Getting properly lost. We ditched the tourist hordes at Windermere and Rydal Water – too obvious – and let the lanes lead us astray. First hidden gem: stumbling on Stock Ghyll Force, just a short wander from town. We’d taken a wrong turn chasing a “public footpath” sign, ending up at this roaring waterfall tucked in a wooded gorge. No crowds, just us slipping on wet rocks, kids whooping as spray soaked us through. I felt a proper daft clutz trying to pose for a selfie and nearly toppling in – gentle reminder that at my age, I’m more spectator than Bear Grylls these days. Next day, another accidental detour up towards Loughrigg Fell. Meant to head for Grasmere, but a faded sign for “Wray Castle viewpoints” lured us off-piste. Turned out to be a serene little path along the River Rothay, past forgotten picnic spots where the bracken whispered secrets. We picnicked on cheese scones from a nearby farm shop (pro tip: grab some from the Spar in Ambleside), watching herons fish in peace. No maps, no plans – just that thrill of discovery, like unearthing buried treasure in your own backyard. Evenings back at the flat were for reliving it all: steaming pasta from the well-kitted kitchen, feet up, plotting tomorrow’s “mishap”. One night, we got lost again on a dusk ramble near Low Sweden Bridge – a secret suspension bridge over a bubbling beck, fairy lights from nearby cottages twinkling like stars. Pure poetry. It hit me then, mid-chuckle over my navigational fails: holidays aren’t about ticking boxes, but these serendipitous moments that stick. The Lakes have a way of rewarding the wanderers. If you fancy ditching the guidebook for proper adventure, this spot’s your launchpad. Can’t wait to go back and lose myself all over again. |
