Our holiday in Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Lake District last month – me behind the wheel, Sarah navigating with that sat-nav that’s got a mind of its own. We’d left Manchester early, full of beans about our little getaway, but halfway through the Lakes, the bloody thing decided to reroute us down some winding single-track road that felt like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. Cue a classic moment: we end up nose-to-nose with a farmer’s tractor, neither of us budging, and me frantically reversing into a hedge while Sarah’s in stitches. “This is why we don’t do spontaneous road trips,” I muttered, but honestly, it set the perfect chaotic tone for cottage life.

By the time we arrived, the sun was dipping behind the fells, and there it was – luxury glamping pod perched on the edge of the coast, all welcoming with its quirky charm and sea views that hit you right in the chest. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. We tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, hearts racing with that proper holiday buzz. No traffic, no emails, just the sound of waves crashing below and the promise of a week doing sod all but good.

It was a proper couple’s retreat, the pair of us kicking back in this snug spot near Millom. Mornings started slow: brewing tea in the quirky kitchen, then a gentle wander down to Haverigg beach, just a stone’s throw away. We’d skim stones (mine always sank, hers flew like pros – typical), or flop on the sand with a thermos of coffee, watching dog walkers and the tide roll in. One afternoon, we ambled over to the coastal path, puffing a bit up the gentle incline towards Black Combe, but didn’t push it – this was about easy rambles, not conquering peaks. The views over the Duddon Estuary were magic, all misty and wild, with seals popping up now and then like nosy neighbours.

Evenings were pure bliss. We’d fire up the hob for simple suppers – think fresh crab from the local shop (none of that fancy restaurant malarkey), washed down with a bottle of red. Chaos crept in, mind: one night, the ancient oven decided to smoke us out mid-roast, leaving us eating fish and chips on the sofa like proper reprobates, laughing till our sides hurt. “We’re not cut out for gourmet, are we?” Sarah said, and I had to agree. It got me thinking, though – back home we’re always rushing, ticking boxes. Here, amid the cottage quirks and coastal calm, I realised it’s the faff and the faffing about that make it. No grand plans, just us, a bit of sea air, and rediscovering why we clicked in the first place.

Days blurred into picking brambles along the shore, a pint at the nearby pub with locals spinning yarns, and lazy lie-ins with the window cracked open to the gull cries. No Instagram perfection, just real, relaxed joy. If you’re after a breather from the world, this corner of the Lakes delivers – mishaps and all. We drove home lighter, already plotting the next escape.
