Our holiday in Lake District
Pulling onto the spacious driveway, we were gobsmacked. There it was: this magnificent detached house right on the edge of Coniston Water, all gated and private, with the lake shimmering beyond like a mirror to the fells. The hush of the woodland wrapped around us instantly, and that first glimpse of the water? Pure magic. We tumbled out, grinning like kids, lugging bags while the dog went mental sniffing everything. It’s the sort of elegant spot that whispers “relax” from the off – panoramic views straight across to the Old Man of Coniston, our own jetty poking into the serene water, and a cosy boathouse hideaway that begged for a sneaky GandT. We were there for a chilled couple’s break, just us two (plus the dog, who counts as family), craving that simple cottage life amid the chaos of everyday. First morning, I faffed about brewing tea on the Aga while she snuck off to the wellness suite – honestly, a gym, sauna, and massage room in a holiday let? We felt dead posh, though I mostly used the sauna to defrost after a brisk walk. Mornings kicked off with brekkie on the terrace, watching mist lift off the lake, then we’d amble down to the private jetty. One day we hired a little rowing boat from Coniston village – just a short hop away – and pottered about, me pretending I knew how to row while she laughed and snapped pics of ducks. Lunch was a messy picnic of sausage rolls and flapjacks by the firepit, flames crackling as the sun dipped behind the hills. Evenings were pure bliss: bubbling in the hot tub under the stars, steam rising as we chatted nonsense, or hunkering in the boathouse with a bottle of red, listening to owls. We wandered the eastern shore paths, picking wild blueberries and dodging the odd sheep, stopping at the Phoenix Cafe in Torver for cream teas that were basically a hug in cake form. Sure, there was chaos – the dog chased a squirrel into the lake, emerging like a drowned rat, and I nearly set fire to a tea towel on the firepit. But that’s the joy, isn’t it? Amid the luxury, it’s those daft moments that stick. Reflecting now, sat back home with a cuppa, I realise it was the quiet that got me. No schedules, no screens – just us, the water, and the fells. We left with full hearts and a promise to return. If you’re after a refined escape that feels like home (but way better), this is it. Lifetime memories, sorted. |
