Our holiday in Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Lake District – M6 crawling along as usual, then that cheeky wrong turn near Kendal because SatNav decided to have a midlife crisis. Ended up on some narrow lane with sheep giving me the evil eye, but hey, it added a bit of adventure before we even arrived. Heart racing a tad, we finally pulled into this lovely cottage tucked amongst beautiful woodlands on a high promontory on the edge of Bowness-on-Windermere. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. As you enter this hidden glade, the many delights unfold – mature trees, fir, bracken, and the occasional squirrel darting about like it owns the place. Picture windows in the sitting room flood the space with that lush green view, and spotting the hot tub out back had us grinning like kids.

We’d booked it for a mates’ getaway, perfect for ditching the daily grind, and from the off, it screamed walking heaven. Lake Windermere’s right there, charismatic Bowness just a stroll away, all wrapped in that classic Lakes countryside. Day one, blue skies mocked the forecasts, so we laced up and headed for a gentle circuit around Fell Foot Park, about three miles down the road. Lakeside paths, ducks quacking for crumbs, proper idyllic stuff. I was striding ahead, pretending I’m Bear Grylls, until I tripped over a root – classic me, turning triumph into a comedy tumble. Laughed it off with a brew back at the cottage, hot tub bubbling away as the sun dipped.

Next morning, British weather pulled its usual trick: lashing rain by breakfast. Plans for the Windermere shoreline hike? Scrapped. Instead, we rugged up and tackled the shorter loop from the cottage into the woodland trails – bracken brushing our knees, mist clinging like a bad ex. It was grim at first, hoods up, cursing the Cumbrian clouds, but then the magic hit: deer peeking through the trees, that earthy smell after rain. We pushed on to a viewpoint over the lake, wind whipping our faces, feeling alive in a way desk life never delivers. Back for tea and biscuits, steaming windows fogged up, reflecting on how the weather’s the great equaliser – turns a soggy plod into something character-building.

Third day, jackpot: a rare dry spell. We ventured to Brant Fell, that cracking little climb behind Bowness, steep but short, rewarding us with panoramic views over the water and fells. Legs burning, lungs full of fresh air, we paused for sarnies, watching boats bob below. Weather teased again that arvo – spots of drizzle forcing an early retreat – but not before we’d earned it. Evenings were bliss: collapsing in the sitting room, windows framing the darkening woods, pints in hand, swapping tall tales.

Looking back, those hikes – good days soaring high, wet ones teaching patience – made it unforgettable. The cottage was our cosy hub, but the Lakes’ paths stole the show. Weather threw curveballs, sure, but that’s the charm. If you’re after a proper reset, grab mates, pack waterproofs, and go. You won’t regret it.
