Our holiday in Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to Wasdale – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and me cursing as the sat-nav decided to chuck a wobbly just past Cockermouth. “Recalculating,” it chirped cheerily, while I ended up on some single-track lane that looked more like a sheep’s personal runway. Fifteen minutes of reversing etiquette with a local farmer later, we finally rolled into Santon Bridge, hearts racing but buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation. What lay ahead? Cosy nights in, epic walks, and who knows what hidden corners of the Lakes we’d stumble upon.

Pulling up to the cottage, my jaw dropped. This isn’t some soulless holiday let – it’s a proper traditional Lakeland number from 1899, all extended into a sprawling 4/5-bedroom family haven that sleeps up to 8-10 with ease. Slap bang in the heart of Wasdale, it’s got these jaw-dropping views over the Wastwater Fells that make you forget the drive in an instant. Inside, the lounge is pure bliss: a gorgeous granite fireplace with a wood-burning stove begging for a crackling blaze, elegant reading chairs, a plush three-seater sofa, and even an upright piano for anyone daft enough to have a bash at Chopsticks after a few wines. The kitchen’s a dream too – recently done up with an electric hob, massive double oven, dishwasher, and microwave, so no one’s slaving over a hot stove while the fells call.

But honestly, the real magic kicked off when we veered off the tourist trail. Day one, we meant to head for Wastwater – you know, that mirror-like lake with the screes that look like they’ve been Photoshopped. Instead, we took a “shortcut” (my fault, map-reading’s not my strong suit) and ended up on a barely-there path above Nether Wasdale. Blimey, what a find! A tucked-away waterfall tumbling into a peaty pool, not a soul around, just us picnicking on cheese butties with the mist rolling off the fells. I sat there, cuppa in hand, thinking, “When did life get so rushed back home? This is what it’s about – proper disconnection.”

Next day, another accidental gem: got lost chasing a herd of Herdwick sheep up towards Buckbarrow, that craggy lump overlooking the valley. Stumbled on an old packhorse bridge, mossy and forgotten, with views straight down to Irton that’d make your Insta jealous (though I didn’t bother posting). We laughed about it over sausage and mash in the kitchen that night, stove roaring, kids bashing out terrible piano duets. Even a cheeky solo wander up to the low fells behind the cottage led to this secret tarn – off-the-beaten-path doesn’t cover it; it was like the Lakes’ best-kept secret, flat calm and ringed by heather, perfect for a skinny dip if you’re braver than me.

Sure, I reflected over a quiet pint at the Kirkstyle – maybe I’m a bit of a numpty with directions, but getting lost unlocked the Lakes’ true soul. No coach parties, no queues, just raw Cumbria. If you’re after that, pack your wellies and embrace the detours. Wasdale’s hidden heart will steal yours.
