Our holiday in Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Lake District last month – me behind the wheel of our trusty old Volvo, sat-nav chirping away like it knew best, and my other half navigating with a crumpled Ordnance Survey map. We’d left the M6 ages ago, winding through those narrow Lakeland lanes, when disaster struck: a sheep decided to play chicken right in front of us near Kendal. I slammed on the brakes, heart in my mouth, and we ended up with woolly wool stuck in the grille. “Typical,” I laughed, picking bits off while we waited for the farmer to amble over. Twenty minutes later, we were off again, buzzing with that holiday anticipation – you know, the kind where you imagine cosy evenings by the fire and epic walks.

Pulling up to our spot felt like stumbling into a secret. Elevated above the tranquil western shores of Lake Windermere in a rural setting, yet close enough to enjoy the amenities of Hawkshead and Ambleside, it was this charming rural cottage that hit all the right notes from the off. Great first impressions: the view across the lake shimmering in the late sun, birdsong everywhere, and that fresh, piney air you can almost taste. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of red, and just soaked it in.

But the real magic? Getting properly lost. None of your coach-tour hotspots for us – we wanted the hidden gems you only find by accident. First morning, we struck out from the cottage with vague intentions of Hawkshead, but took a wrong turn down a bridleway that wasn’t even on the map. Ended up at this tucked-away tarn, not a soul around, just us skipping stones and picnicking on cheese rolls. I felt a proper twit for not packing the good camera, but honestly, it was perfect – no filters needed.

Next day, we parked near Far Sawrey and let our feet lead us into Claife Heights. What a find! We bushwhacked (well, more like stumbled) along faint paths through oak woods dripping with moss, emerging at a viewpoint over Windermere that made my jaw drop. No car park, no tea room – just peace, with the lake below like a mirror to the fells. We got so carried away chatting and snapping selfies, we looped back via a boggy bit that turned my boots into mud monsters. Laughed till we cried, me slipping arse-over-tit into a puddle. “Graceful as ever,” my partner quipped.

Evenings were for accidental discoveries closer to home. One dusk, wandering from the cottage, we chanced on a wee farm track leading to a deserted pebble beach on the lakeshore. Sat there with flasks of tea, watching herons fish as the sun dipped behind the Langdales. Pure bliss. It got me reflecting, you see – back home, life’s all rush and screens, but out here, getting lost isn’t a faff, it’s the point. Reminded me to slow down, breathe, and let serendipity do the driving.

Those few days were gold dust. If you’re heading to Windermere’s west side, ditch the guidebook and embrace the detours – that’s where the Lakes truly shine.
