Our holiday in Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to Windermere – we’d packed the car to bursting with crisps, wine, and enough books to see us through a nuclear winter, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just past Kendal. It insisted on shunting us down some narrow back lane that turned into a sheep-jammed single track. There I was, white-knuckling the wheel, swearing under my breath while the kids in the back chuckled and filmed it all for TikTok. Half an hour late and frazzled, we finally rolled through those electric gates, and blimey, what a sight. Perched right on the shores of England’s biggest lake, this sleek, modern detached house hit us like a warm hug from an old mate – all glass and light, pulling the shimmering water straight into the living space. First impressions? Bloody marvellous. I felt the holiday tension melt away before we’d even unpacked.

From that moment, it was all about doing bugger all, and loving every lazy second. No grand plans, no ticking off Beatrix Potter trails or scrambling up fells – just us, slowing right down in this perfect haven. The kitchen-diner became our command centre, with its massive windows framing Lake Windermere like a living painting. I’d potter about making tea on the posh appliances while the others lounged at the breakfast bar, nattering about nothing much. Lunch was a posh cheeseboard affair, watching boats chug by and the sun dance on the water. Evenings? We’d shove dinner onto the dining table, glass in hand, mesmerised as the sky turned pink and orange. One night, we cracked open the bi-fold doors to the patio and fired up the hot tub – bubbles, cold fizz, and not a care in the world. The garden sweeps down through ancient woodland to a private little beach and jetty, alive with birds and butterflies. I’d flop on a lounger there with a paperback, letting the gentle lap of the lake lull me into a doze. Pure bliss.

The sitting room was made for film marathons on that cinema-sized telly with its thumping Sonos sound – we binged old favourites on those sky-blue designer sofas, feet up, dozing through the credits. And the snug? My secret weapon. I’d sneak off with the papers or a dog-eared novel on that leather sofa, stealing hours of peace while the rain pattered outside. Bedrooms were heaven too – we nabbed the master with its wraparound balcony, where I’d sip coffee at dawn, watching mist lift off the water. Super-king beds, en-suites, lake views in three of them – no arguments over who got what.

Truth be told, mid-week I had a proper moment of reflection, staring out from the balcony. Life back home’s a mad rush – deadlines, school runs, the lot. Here, time stretched out lazy-like, reminding me it’s the small stuff that recharges the batteries. No need for hardcore hikes when a gentle wander to Bowness for a boat cruise or ice cream did the trick. We hired a rowboat one afternoon, pottered about, then back for more reading and hot tubbing. It’s the joy of sod-all that lingers – that rare chance to breathe, laugh, and just be. Can’t wait to go back and do it all over again.
