Our holiday in Lake District
I finally made it to the Lake District after what felt like the world's slowest drive from the M6. Picture this: me, a thermos of tea that's gone cold, and the sat-nav deciding to have a midlife crisis just as we hit the twisty lanes near Grange-over-Sands. It rerouted us down a single-track road that was basically a sheep's personal catwalk – one wrong move and we'd be apologising to a flock with our bumper. But honestly, even that little drama had me grinning; nothing says 'holiday' like a proper British road mishap.

Pulling up to the cottage on the outskirts of Cartmel, my heart did a little flip. It's this gorgeous traditional 17th-century number, tucked into a stunning rural spot on a site with a few luxury pods nearby – perfect if you're travelling with mates or family. The anticipation built as we parked up on the ample off-road space, and stepping through the gate? Blimey, first impressions were spot on. That private garden with its bubbling hot tub looked like pure bliss, framed by rolling fells that screamed 'welcome to the Lakes'.

From the off, though, I knew this trip was all about doing bugger all – and I mean that in the best way. No epic hikes for this lot; we'd had enough of that on previous jaunts. Instead, we claimed the chesterfield sofas in the living/dining room, fired up the woodburning stove, and let the world slow to a crawl. Smart TV on standby for the odd movie night, but mostly it was books and brews. I devoured a battered copy of Beatrix Potter – fitting, right? – while the rain pattered outside like a gentle applause. There's something dead magical about that inglenook fireplace glow, turning a grey afternoon into hygge heaven.

Lazy days blurred into one another. Mornings meant shuffling out to the garden with coffee, toes in the grass, watching mist lift off the hills. Afternoons? Hot tub sessions, naturally. Bubbling away with a GandT (local gin, naturally), staring at nothing but clouds and the odd buzzard circling. We wandered just far enough for sticky toffee pudding at a Cartmel tearoom – that village is a five-minute amble, all priory charm and fell views – but never strayed beyond. No need; the joy was in the stillness. One evening, as the sun dipped behind the fells, I caught myself just sitting there, book forgotten, thinking, 'When did I last properly switch off like this?' Work emails? Forgotten. Deadlines? What deadlines? It was a gentle nudge that slowing down isn't lazy – it's essential.

Even the evenings were low-key perfection: supper from the local farm shop (Cumbrian cheeses that could make you weep), then back to the sofas for a film or three. Friends in the pods popped over for a natter, but mostly it was our bubble. By the end of the week, I felt unwound, like someone had ironed out the knots in my soul. If you're after Lakes escapism without the sweat, this is it – pure, unadulterated pottering. Can't wait to go back and do even less.
