Our holiday in Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Lake District last month – me behind the wheel, Sarah navigating with that sat-nav that kept insisting we turn left into a sheep field. We’d left Manchester at dawn, buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation, you know? Windows down, playlist on shuffle, dreaming of cosy evenings by the fire. But about an hour in, disaster struck: a flat tyre on the M6. Typical me, hadn’t checked the pressures. We pulled over near Kendal, faffed about with the spare while lorries thundered past, and laughed our heads off when I got covered in muck trying to work the jack. An hour’s delay, but hey, it made the arrival all the sweeter.

By early afternoon, we rolled into Ulverston, hearts lifting at the sight of those rolling fells and glimpses of Coniston Water. The property was this cracking little detached barn conversion, all rustic charm with a private hot tub tucked round the back – perfect for a chilled-out couple’s break, no kids or crowds to contend with. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. Stepped inside to a sunlit open-plan space, wood burner already set, and a welcome hamper with local fudge and tea that had us grinning like idiots. Dropped the bags, cracked open a bottle of wine, and just soaked it in. After the tyre trauma, it felt like we’d stumbled into our own private slice of Cumbria.

We kept things dead simple, proper cottage life with a side of chaos. Mornings started with brews on the patio, watching mist lift off the hills, then a gentle wander down to Bardsea Beach – it’s only a few miles away, that lovely stretch of sand and shingle where you can paddle in the bay and spot seals bobbing about. One day we packed a picnic (cheese ploughman’s, naturally) and ambled along the coast path, getting properly windswept but loving every blustery minute. Afternoon chaos came courtesy of the hot tub – slipped in too quick after a rainy hike up Hoad Hill, and I ended up with a face full of bubbles, yelping like a daft puppy while Sarah howled with laughter. “You’re 42, not 12!” she teased. Fair play.

Evenings were pure bliss: firing up the barbecue (rain held off, miracle), then curling up with Netflix and that wood burner crackling away. We nipped into Ulverston for fish and chips from the Laurel and Hardy chippy – sticky fingers, newspaper wrapping, the works – and mooched round the market square, picking up handmade soap and a bit of Swinside cheese. No grand plans, just those little pleasures: the way the light hits the fells at dusk, sharing a slab of sticky toffee pudding, or spotting a heron by the estuary on our sunset strolls.

Looking back, it was dead therapeutic. Life’s been manic with work lately, and I caught myself one quiet evening, feet up, thinking how we forget to switch off. No signal half the time, no rush – just us, a bit of nature, and enough minor mishaps to keep it real. If you’re after a relaxed reset, this corner of the Lakes delivers. We’re already plotting a return.
