Our holiday in Lake District
Finally, we spot the electric gates off the main road, punch in the code, and ease the car down this steep, twisty drive through the estate. Heart's pounding a bit – is this really ours for the weekend? The trees part, and bam, there it is: this stunning boat house perched with Lake Windermere sparkling below. I mean, proper jaw-dropper. We park at the back, grab our bags, and tackle the steps down to the entrance – more of a workout than I'd bargained for after that drive, huffing like I'd run a marathon. Fumble the keycode twice because my hands are sweaty with anticipation, but once inside... blimey. First impressions? Ten out of ten, no notes. It's this romantic little haven, all sleek and modern with massive windows framing the lake like a painting you can't look away from. We dump the bags and make a beeline for the balcony – views for days, water lapping gently, distant hills shrouded in mist. Brewed a cuppa (proper builder's tea, none of your fancy stuff), and just sat there grinning like idiots. "We've made it," I say, and she laughs, pointing out a heron skimming the surface. That first evening, we wandered a short stroll to the lake's edge – it's only a hop from Bowness proper – skimmed stones, watched rowers out training, and nattered about nothing. No itinerary, just pure bliss. Later, as the sun dipped and turned the water gold, I had one of those quiet moments. Sat there with a beer, thinking how I muck up the small stuff – like that daft detour – but these pockets of peace make it all worthwhile. We've been together donkey's years, rushing about life, and this? This was us hitting pause. Next morning, we hired a little motorboat from the nearby jetty (dead easy, five-minute drive), puttered about spotting swans and the odd posh yacht. Popped into Bowness for fish and chips wrapped in paper, scoffing them on a bench overlooking the water. Laughed about my driving fiasco over a pint at a cosy local boozer – The Angel, I reckon it was, proper Lakeland charm without the crowds. Honestly, if you're after a romantic bolt-hole with a side of adventure, this is it. Messy arrival and all, it was the perfect reset. Can't wait to go back – next time, I'll stick to the A-roads. |
