Our holiday in Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Lake District last month – me behind the wheel of our battered old estate car, sat-nav swearing blind we were nearly there, and then bam, a rogue sheep decides to play chicken right in the middle of a narrow Lakeland lane near Millom. Heart in my mouth, I slammed on the brakes, and the poor thing just blinked at us before trotting off. “Welcome to the Lakes,” laughed my other half from the passenger seat, as we sat there giggling like idiots. Ten minutes later, we were pulling up to this cosy little detached cottage, all tucked away in its own quiet spot with a garden that screamed peace and quiet. First impressions? Bloody brilliant – the kind of place that makes you exhale and think, “Yeah, this is exactly what we needed.”

We’d booked it for a proper getaway, no grand plans, just us, some wellies, and a vague idea of wandering. But the real magic kicked off straight away when we fancied a stretch after unpacking. Instead of heading for the obvious trails, I suggested we follow a wee footpath we spotted snaking off from the garden gate – total whim, no map. Turned out it led us into this hidden pocket of woodland, proper off-the-beaten-track stuff, where the trees drip with moss and the only sounds are rustling leaves and the odd bird having a chinwag. We stumbled on a tiny cascade tumbling into a crystal-clear beck, not a soul around. Sat there with flasks of tea, feet dangling in the water, feeling like we’d gatecrashed someone else’s secret Eden. “How did we not know about this?” I muttered, half to myself.

That set the tone – getting lost became our thing. Next day, we veered off another unmarked track barely a mile from the cottage, ending up at this forgotten tarn that doesn’t even make the guidebooks. Mist rolling off the water, bracken everywhere, and us picking our way through like a pair of excited kids. Found a flat rock perfect for picnics, unpacked our cheese sarnies, and watched the clouds do their dramatic Lakeland dance. Hilarious moment when I slipped on some mud trying to “capture the view” on my phone – ended up arse-over-tit in a puddle, phone miraculously spared. We howled with laughter, me dripping and grinning like a fool.

Wandering further afield on footpaths no wider than a sheep track, we chanced upon an old packhorse bridge, mossy and ancient, spanning a burbling stream. No crowds, no car parks – just us and the whisper of wind through the ferns. It got me reflecting, you know? Back home, life’s all rush and screens, but out here, losing yourself in these hidden corners strips it all back. Makes you realise how much beauty’s hiding if you just let the path lead you.

By the end of the week, we’d clocked half a dozen such gems, all within spitting distance of the cottage, none of them signposted or touristy. Left feeling recharged, a bit muddier than planned, and already plotting the next “accidental” adventure. If you’re after the real Lakes, ditch the hotspots and get properly lost – you won’t regret it.
