Our holiday in Isle Of Wight
I’ll never forget the drive over to the Isle of Wight for our little getaway – we’d splashed out on a ferry from Southampton, buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation, you know, the kind where you’re already picturing yourself lounging about with a cuppa. But of course, things didn’t go entirely to plan. Halfway across the Solent, the heavens opened, and we got stuck in a massive queue of caravans and day-trippers. I spent a good ten minutes faffing about with the windscreen wipers while my other half dozed off, snoring gently. Still, by the time we rolled off at Lymington and chugged our way to Totland Bay, the sun was peeking out, and my heart lifted. What a first impression – that crisp sea air hitting you like a cheeky welcome, with the bay stretching out all golden and inviting.

The cottage was just the ticket: a cosy two-bed number tucked away in a quiet spot, all welcoming and unpretentious, with a garden that begged you to kick off your shoes and flop down. From the off, it felt like permission to do bugger all – and boy, did we take it. No grand plans, no rushing about; just the sheer joy of slowing right down. Mornings started lazy, with me padding out to the garden in my slippers, brewing a pot of tea and settling into a deckchair with a dog-eared paperback. The sun filtered through the leaves, birds cheeping away, and the distant crash of waves at Totland Bay providing the perfect soundtrack. I’d lose hours like that, turning pages slower than a snail on a bank holiday, occasionally glancing up to watch butterflies flit about. Pure bliss, honestly.

We did venture out once or twice, mind – couldn’t resist packing a picnic and ambling that mile down to the beach. Totland Bay’s sand and shingle mix is spot on for a gentle paddle or just sprawling out with a sandwich, toes in the water. Stay till dusk, and you’re treated to one of the island’s corking sunsets, all fiery oranges melting into the sea. There’s an old-school pier with a few stalls flogging ice creams and chips – we grabbed some and sat giggling like kids as the light faded. Families splashing nearby, couples hand-in-hand; it’s got that easygoing vibe that makes you grin.

Another day, we pottered up to Tennyson Down, just a couple of miles off – a National Trust spot with paths that aren’t too taxing if you’re in no rush. The views over the Needles are proper stunning, cliffs plunging down like they’re showing off, and there’s a tearoom at the top doling out slabs of Victoria sponge and endless pots of tea. We munched away, legs dangling over the edge, feeling like we’d earned it without breaking a sweat.

Looking back, that’s what sticks: the gentle self-reflection of just being. In the rush of everyday life, I’m always chasing the next thing, but those cottage days forced me to pause. Reading in the garden, napping in the hammock, listening to nothing but the breeze – it was a reminder that doing very little can fill you up more than any itinerary. If you’re after a proper unwind on the Wight, find yourself a spot like this. You won’t regret it.
