Our holiday in Isle Of Wight
I’ll never forget the drive over to the Isle of Wight for our recent holiday – or rather, the ferry crossing that nearly did me in. We’d piled into the car from Southampton, buzzing with that pre-holiday excitement, kids chattering about sandcastles and me dreaming of a proper sit-down with a cuppa. But as we queued for the Wightlink ferry, the heavens opened, and our windscreen wipers were working overtime. Then, disaster: a rogue seagull decided our roof rack was prime real estate and left us a rather unwelcome ‘gift’ just as we boarded. Laughing it off with some wet wipes, we made it across the Solent, and by the time we trundled into Shanklin, the sun was peeking out like it was apologising.

Pulling up to this luxurious coastal hideaway, just over 300 metres from the golden sands of Shanklin Beach, I felt that proper ‘ahh’ moment. It’s a single-storey suite, sleeping six across three elegant bedrooms – perfect for our family of four plus mates. Stylish without being fussy, it felt like instant home, with Shanklin’s cheeky seaside vibe right on the doorstep: amusements, gift shops, and pubs serving up fish and chips that could make you weep.

We’d planned our week around the Isle of Wight Coastal Path, less than half a mile away, figuring it’d be all sun-kissed strolls. First day, jackpot – blue skies, light breeze. We headed towards Sandown, just two miles along the cliffs. The views! Crashing waves below, gorse buzzing with bees, and the kids racing ahead like feral goats. We paused for pebble-skipping contests on hidden coves, me pretending I wasn’t knackered after five minutes. Pure bliss, that English seaside magic.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour. Next morning, grey clouds rolled in like uninvited guests, and by lunch it was lashing down. Our grand Ventnor hike (4.5 miles the other way) was scrubbed; instead, we layered up for a soggy beach ramble right from the property. Rain drumming on our hoods, we splashed through puddles, discovering Shanklin’s old smugglers’ paths winding behind the beach. It was grim at first – sodden socks, steaming tea flasks – but somehow brilliant. The kids built epic driftwood forts under a beach hut overhang, and we ended up in a cosy Shanklin café, dripping and giggling over cream teas. Who needs plans?

A couple of days later, the sun fought back for a mixed-bag adventure. Misty start, then patches of blue as we looped closer to home, weaving through the Coastal Path’s undulating dunes. One minute we’re dodging sudden showers, the next basking in rainbows over the sea. It forced us to slow down, spot herons in the rock pools, and chat properly – no phones, just us.

Looking back, those weather-whipped walks were the highlight. They reminded me I’m not 20 anymore, puffing on the ups, but there’s joy in adapting, isn’t there? No epic treks to far-flung spots needed; Shanklin’s paths delivered everything. If you fancy coastal adventures with a side of unpredictability, this spot’s a gem. We’re already plotting a return – hopefully with better brollies.
