Our holiday in Isle Of Wight
I’ll never forget the drive over to the Isle of Wight – or rather, the ferry crossing that nearly did me in. We’d piled into the car at Southampton, me, my other half, our two lads, my mum and dad, and the dog, Monty, who was already whining from the boot. Everything was tickety-boo until we hit a bit of chop on the Solent. I’m not the best sailor at the best of times, and by the time we docked at Yarmouth, I was greener than the seaweed clinging to the pier. “Right,” I muttered, clutching a ginger beer, “this holiday’s about doing bugger all, so let’s start now.”

Pulling up to our charming family and dog-friendly cottage in Colwell Bay had me grinning like a Cheshire cat, though. Tucked in this tranquil coastal spot, it was immaculate and just begged you to unwind – perfect for our multi-generational rabble or a mates’ getaway. The anticipation built as we tumbled out, Monty bounding ahead, and those first impressions? Spot on. A short 200-metre stroll to the sand-and-shingle beach, with a cracking beachfront restaurant wafting fish and chips our way, and the sea breeze whispering promises of lazy days. Shops and pubs just half a mile off if we fancied a pint, but honestly, who needed them?

From that moment, it was all about savouring the joy of doing very little. Our days melted into this glorious rhythm of slobbing out in the garden, which was a suntrap begging for deckchairs and downtime. I’d crack open a book – some daft thriller I’d been meaning to read for months – while Mum dozed under her wide-brim hat, Dad pottered with Monty, and the lads sprawled on the grass, phones forgotten for once. No grand plans, just the sound of waves lapping in the distance and the odd seagull squawking overhead. We’d wander down to Colwell Bay beach now and then, not for watersports or anything energetic – though we did eye up the canoe hire with vague interest – but to flop on the shingle, paddle our toes, and watch the horizon do its thing.

One afternoon, I caught myself staring at a chalky cliff, pint in hand from the nearby pub, and had this gentle moment of self-reflection. Life back home’s a right whirlwind – deadlines, school runs, the lot. Here, time stretched out like toffee. “Blimey,” I thought, “why don’t we do this more often? Just switch off and let the world spin without us.” It was hilariously simple, really – no Needles chairlift adventures for us (though they’re only 2.5 miles away if the mood struck), just coastal walks that looped back to the cottage for tea and toast.

Evenings were pure bliss: barbecues in the garden as the sun dipped, laughter echoing, Monty snoring at our feet. We’d chat about nothing much, or everything, while the neighbourhood’s friendly vibe wrapped around us like a cosy blanket. By the end of the week, I felt properly recharged, wrinkles smoothed out. If you’re after a proper break – multi-gen family, mates, whoever – this Isle of Wight gem is it. Slow down, read, lounge, repeat. Couldn’t recommend it more.
