About Isle Of Wight
I’ll never forget the drive over to the Isle of Wight for our little holiday – chucking it down with rain the whole way from Portsmouth, and then the ferry from Southampton decided to hit a bit of delay because of the wind. We ended up queuing for ages, me tapping the steering wheel like an impatient drummer, wondering if we’d ever make it. But as the Solent came into view, that anticipation bubbled up – Cowes was calling, with its sailing buzz and seaside promise. By the time we docked and trundled the few miles to the apartment, the clouds were parting just enough to tease us with blue sky.

First impressions? Blimey, what a cracker. This spacious first-floor flat in a converted period building, just a short walk from the seafront, hit us right away with those panoramic sea views from the windows – the Solent sparkling like it was showing off. It felt like proper home-from-home, easy access to Cowes’ pebble beaches and the lively town centre with its cafés and bars. We dumped the bags and headed straight out, lungs full of that briny air, buzzing to explore on foot.

Day one was all about optimism. We plotted a gentle hike along the coastal path towards Gurnard Marshes, about three miles out, dodging the odd puddle from the morning drizzle. The weather held – breezy but bright – and we chatted away about nothing much, spotting yachts bobbing in the harbour. Cowes is mad for sailing, isn’t it? You can feel the regatta vibe even off-season, with posters up for summer races. Lunch was fish and chips from a beachfront spot, eaten on the pebbles while watching the waves.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a cheeky way of keeping you on your toes. Next morning, we fancied the loop up to Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s old pad, with its gardens begging for a stroll. Only about a mile and a half from the flat, perfect for walkers. Blue skies again at first, so off we went, me in my daft walking trainers pretending to be an intrepid hiker. The paths wind through woods and along the water, with views that make you stop and gawp. We poked around the grounds, imagining royals swanning about, and I had one of those gentle moments – sat on a bench, cuppa in hand from the café, reflecting on how these simple ambles recharge the batteries better than any spa day.

Then, classic Isle of Wight twist: clouds rolled in thick as fog mid-afternoon, turning our planned longer circuit back along the cliffs into a soggy scramble. Rain hammered down, forcing us to duck into a barn café near East Cowes for emergency tea and cake. Laughing about it now – we looked like drowned rats, but it was brilliant. Pivoted to a town wander instead, weaving through Cowes’ streets, popping into quirky shops and a pub for a pint. The weather flipped plans from epic hikes to cosy discoveries, but that’s the charm, right? One day it’s sun-drenched coastal trots; the next, it’s adapting with a grin.

By the end of the week, we’d notched up miles of walks – from seafront shuffles to that muddy dash – all within easy reach of the flat. The views never palled, and those weather whims made it memorable. If you’re after a spot for leg-stretching adventures with a side of history and sailing flair, this Cowes gem’s got it in spades. We’re already plotting a return when the regattas are on. Cheers to that!
