About Isle Of Wight
I’ll never forget the drive over to the Isle of Wight – what should’ve been a straightforward ferry hop from Portsmouth turned into a right old faff. We’d booked the Red Funnel crossing, but thick fog rolled in off the Solent, delaying us by an hour. Then, as we finally chugged into Cowes, the sat-nav on my phone decided to throw a wobbly, directing us down a narrow lane that dead-ended at a field full of inquisitive cows. Picture me, red-faced, reversing with the caravan of beach gear strapped to the roof, while my other half stifled giggles. “Typical us,” I muttered, finally finding the right turning towards Seaview. By the time we trundled up to the property, we were knackered but buzzing with that holiday anticipation – you know, the bit where everything smells of sea salt and possibility.

Pulling up outside this lovely large Edwardian pile, my heart lifted straight away. Ours was the light and spacious apartment in the upper west wing, with a small separate one above it – perfect for a family like ours craving a bit of independence without the hassle of a full hotel. The first impressions? Blimey, it was spot on. High ceilings, big windows flooding the place with that soft island light, and a balcony overlooking the gentle slope down to Seagrove Bay. We dumped the bags and cracked open a window – hello, fresh sea breeze! It felt like we’d stumbled into someone’s posh nan’s seaside retreat, all welcoming and unpretentious.

That first afternoon, after shaking off the travel gremlins, we wandered straight down to Seagrove Bay. It’s just a hop away, that golden stretch of sand where the water’s calm enough for paddling without worrying the kids would get swept off to France. We hired a couple of paddleboards from the beach hut – nothing fancy, just wobbly fun that had us all collapsing in hysterics when I inevitably toppled in first. “Graceful as a seal, me,” I laughed, spluttering seawater. Priory Bay’s even prettier, a cheeky ten-minute stroll along the coastal path, with its secluded coves begging for a swim or a spot of boating. We didn’t faff about with proper boats that day, just skimmed stones and watched the yachts bob in the bay.

Come evening, we ambled into Seaview’s village centre – atmospheric doesn’t cover it. Those little independent shops selling nautical knick-knacks, the sailing club humming with chatter, and we grabbed fish and chips from one of the cosy restaurants. Sat outside as the sun dipped, chips dripping vinegar, it hit me: after a hectic year of work and school runs, this was the reset we needed. I caught myself smiling like a daft sod, thinking how a bit of arrival chaos had made the good bits shine brighter. No grand adventures planned yet, but with beaches on the doorstep and that easy island vibe, who needs them? If you’re after a proper unwind, this neck of the Wight’s got it in spades. Can’t wait to go back.
