About Isle Of Wight
I’ll never forget the drive over to the Isle of Wight for our little getaway – or rather, the ferry crossing that nearly did me in. We’d piled into the car at Portsmouth, buzzing with that pre-holiday excitement, cups of tea sloshing about in the holders, when halfway across the Solent, the heavens opened. Proper biblical rain, the kind that turns the windscreen into a waterfall. I was gripping the wheel like it was a lifeline, convinced we’d end up bobbing about like extras in a disaster flick. But we made it, docking at Fishbourne with grins plastered on, the sun peeking out just to tease us.

Pulling up to our ground-floor apartment in Shanklin felt like stumbling into a hug. It’s one of those delightful spots right in the heart of this classic seaside town, perfect for couples or a small family like ours. The setup’s spot-on – cosy rooms arranged just so, with decor that whispers ‘get out and enjoy the beaches’ without shouting. From the off, it had that welcoming vibe, like it knew we needed to unwind.

Truth be told, that’s exactly what we did. No grand plans, no ticking off lists of must-sees. We were there for the joy of doing bugger all, and it was bliss. Mornings kicked off lazy in the garden – a proper suntrap, tucked away with room to sprawl on the loungers. I’d brew a pot of tea (builder’s strength, naturally), and we’d potter about with the papers, watching bees buzz the lavender. One day, I swear I spent three hours just flicking through an old paperback thriller, feet up, letting the world fade. My other half dozed off with a magazine over her face – picture-perfect sloth.

Afternoons melted into the same rhythm. A gentle wander down to Shanklin Beach, maybe five minutes away, toes in the sand, but nothing strenuous. We’d grab fish and chips from a shack, eat them straight from the paper while the waves lapped, then amble back for more garden time. The air’s so fresh there, salty and alive, it makes you breathe deeper without trying. Evenings? Curled up inside with a bottle of wine, Netflix flickering, or just chatting rubbish till the stars came out. No rush, no alarms.

Looking back, I had a proper moment of self-reflection one sunset, glass in hand, garden all golden. Life back home’s a whirlwind – deadlines, emails, the lot. Here, time stretched out like toffee. I realised I’d forgotten how good it feels to switch off, to let the days blur into nothing much. Shanklin’s got its charms – the coastal paths if you fancy a leg-stretch, or a cream tea in town – but we barely scratched them. And that was the point. This holiday wasn’t about conquering the Isle of Wight; it was about surrendering to the slow lane. Can’t wait to go back and do even less.
