About Isle Of Wight
I’ll never forget the drive over to the Isle of Wight for our little family getaway – the kids buzzing in the back, me navigating with a dodgy sat-nav that decided to send us on a scenic detour through some back lane that felt like it hadn’t seen a car since the war. We ended up in a queue at the Fishbourne ferry, munching pasties and laughing as the littlest one smeared custard all over the windows. By the time we rolled off at Portsmouth and chugged across to the island, the sun was dipping low, and I was proper excited – Ventnor’s got that proper seaside charm, you know, all cliffs and waves, and I could already picture us kicking back.

Pulling into the village, the studio apartment we’d booked popped into view, tucked close to the beach down a cheeky set of steps. First impressions? Blimey, it was a belter – neatly turned out with this lovely charm that screamed romantic getaway, but perfect for us lot too, even with the inevitable chaos of kids’ toys everywhere. Wandered in and straight into this far-reaching open-plan sitting room, plonked on the comfy sofa with a cuppa, gazing out at those sea views while the kids fought over the remote. A couple of steps up to the well-equipped kitchen, all sleek grey with a breakfast bar where I nursed my morning coffee the next day, pretending I was on a proper continental holiday.

The double bedroom swept right off it, dead relaxing for unwinding after a day out – though with our two under-fives, it was more like tag-teaming bedtime stories till they conked out. We kept it simple, proper cottage life style: mornings ambling down to Ventnor Beach, just a hop away, building wonky sandcastles that the tide cheekily flattened before lunch. Picnics of fish and chips from the beachfront stalls, the kids paddling in the shallows while I chased after the football they kept lobbing into the waves. Afternoon wander up to Ventnor Botanic Garden – not too far, just a gentle stroll – where we mooched among the exotic plants, the little ones pretending to be explorers and me secretly loving how it felt like a mini jungle right on our doorstep.

One evening, we hit the esplanade for ice creams, watching the donkeys on the beach and giggling at a seagull nicking a chip off someone’s plate. Chaos ensued when our toddler decided to chase it halfway down the sand – classic family holiday pandemonium! Sat on the balcony later, sipping wine as the sun set over the sea, I had a proper moment of reflection: life’s mad with work and school runs, but these simple bits – salty air, sandy toes, full-bellied laughs – they recharge you, don’t they? No need for grand adventures; this relaxed break in Ventnor nailed it, blending seaside bliss with that cosy cottage vibe. We’re already plotting a return – next time, maybe with fewer seagull chases!
