About Isle Of Wight
Pulling up to our spot in Yarmouth felt like stumbling on a secret. It’s this delightful beachfront coastal cottage apartment, once an old boathouse, all rustic and open-plan upstairs with these superb panoramic views across to Lymington. Downstairs, you flop on the comfiest sofas to recharge, and that patio door? Straight out onto the shingle beach for a gentle wander. First impressions? Magic. The loft-style bedroom had us grinning like kids – perfect for a romantic retreat, though we were just two mates escaping the rat race. We didn’t have grand plans; Yarmouth’s got that unhurried vibe, but the real joy was getting properly lost, unearthing hidden gems by accident. First afternoon, we ambled along the beach, veering off the main path towards the estuary. Ended up at this tucked-away spot by the River Yar – a little wooden bench overlooking mudflats where seals bobbed about, fishing at low tide. No crowds, just us and the gulls. I sat there thinking, when did I last switch off like this? Work’s been a grind lately, and it hit me: sometimes you need to misread the map to find your bearings. Next day, we hopped on our bikes – the cottage is so central for that – and took a wrong turn inland from the harbour. Stumbled into Thorley Brook, this serene nature reserve I’d never heard of. Boardwalks winding through reeds, dragonflies darting everywhere, and a heron that eyed us like we were intruders. We picnicked on pasties from the village bakery (cheesy veg ones – divine), watching boats chug by. Pure fluke, but what a find. Felt like we’d gatecrashed someone’s private paradise. Evenings were for mooching back along the shingle, discovering mini coves where the pebbles glow at sunset. One night, we got disoriented in the dunes near Bouldnor – not far, mind – and chanced on an old battery from the war days, half-buried and whispering history. Sat with a thermos of tea, chatting rubbish till dark. Laugh out loud moment? Me slipping on seaweed, ending up bum-deep in a puddle. Dignity? What dignity? Yarmouth’s like that – off-the-beaten-track treasures if you let yourself wander. No tourist traps, just serendipity. Left feeling recharged, vowing to get lost more often. If you’re after a tranquil bolt-hole with sea views and space to breathe (it links up with mates’ places nearby for bigger groups), this is it. Proper gem. |
