We set off from the ferry in good spirits, the satnav promising a quick hop to Shanklin and our six-bed cottage just a short stroll from the sands. Naturally, we managed to miss the turning twice, circle a roundabout three times, and arrive with the boot wedged against someone’s recycling bin. The neighbour gave us a sympathetic wave as we sheepishly hauled our bags inside, already laughing at how the simplest journey can unravel.

Once the door clicked shut behind us, the cottage felt instantly welcoming. High ceilings, a big kitchen table scattered with well-thumbed maps, and wide windows letting in that soft coastal light. We dumped our rucksacks, swapped trainers for sandals, and stepped straight out onto the pavement that leads down to the esplanade. The air smelled of warm tarmac and salt, and the sea looked temptingly close.

Our plan had been a proper coastal walk along the cliffs towards Sandown, stopping for ice creams and maybe a paddle. The forecast had promised unbroken sunshine, so we set off with only water bottles and optimism. Halfway along the path the sky suddenly turned that familiar Isle of Wight grey, and within minutes a proper summer shower sent us scurrying under the nearest shelter—a wooden kiosk selling postcards and fudge. We stood there sharing a slightly melted 99, watching families bolt for cafés while seagulls swooped for dropped chips.

By the time the rain eased, the sun had reappeared and steam was rising from the footpath. We decided to keep going, shoes squelching, trousers damp at the hems. The cliffs looked freshly washed, the chalk brighter than before, and the breeze carried that clean, green scent of wet bracken. Every few minutes we paused to let faster walkers pass, exchanging the usual British nods about the changeable weather.

Back at the cottage that evening, sandy feet on the doormat, we spread wet jackets over the radiator and made tea in mismatched mugs. I found myself thinking how often our best memories happen when plans go slightly wrong. The mishap on the road, the sudden shower, the soggy trainers—all of it had nudged us into slower moments we might otherwise have rushed past. Tomorrow we’d try the same path again, this time with waterproofs, but for now it was enough to sit by the open window, listen to the evening tide, and feel properly arrived.
